| Actually I have always found the concept of patriotism rather queer and disquieting. Pride in who you are and where you come from yes, but a 'love' for ones country!? Patriotism seems altogether too forced, to insular, to false and insincere. All that symbolism and ‘wrapping oneself in the flag’, very, very weird! And it subverts the individual in favour of the State, never a good thing. Quite telling too that “unpatriotic” has become a pejorative term, a synonym, for anyone who dares question the legitimacy of a government’s action. The Iraq war being the perfect example, despite all the lies it’s ‘unpatriotic’ to question your government and far better to blindly follow into war!? |
