'Savage' attack on Thai waiter

(BangkokPost.com from reports) Former Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes was arrested last week for reportedly racially abusing a waiter at a Thai restaurant a month earlier. He turned himself in voluntarily to police and is currently out on bail.

The entertainment website Gigwise reported:

"Hayes was taken in for questioning by Police on Friday night for racially abusing staff at the Busaba Eathai on Wardour Street on July 22 "

Aceshowbiz.com added other details.

It said the former front man of pop group Savage Garden was questioned by police on Friday, Aug 17 after he allegedly abused a male member of the staff at Busaba Eathai Thai restaurant.

He was released on bail and has since refused to comment.

The Thai restaurant manager has reportedly confirmed the incident involved a verbal attack by Hayes on a member of staff.

Hayes, who was last in the news last year when he married his boyfriend, has supposedly denied the allegation.

The ex-singer's solicitor posted a statement on Hayes' website confirming the arrest and, like any lawyer, stressed how Hayes was the victim, rather than the waiter or his restaurant.

The statement claimed Hayes was "deeply upset at the allegation which he strenuously denies. Anyone who knows Darren will recognise that the particular nature of the allegation is totally abhorrent to him and contrary to everything for which he has stood."

The lawyer's statement did not say how knowing Hayes could change the police, waiter and restaurant manager's reports of the incident.
