The Government Lottery Office (GLO) is pondering a new online lottery model which will offer a jackpot prize of up to 400 million baht for the winner.

GLO director Maj-Gen Chalongrat Nark-arthit said that the proposed new lottery scheme was expected to be submitted to the board for consideration in September before it is to be tabled for cabinet’s approval.

He said that the new online lotto was modelled after foreign lottos in a way that the prices could be rolled over for two successive draws if the prize was not claimed by a winner and the jackpot prize could rise up to 300-400 million baht for the only winner.

The GLO law is now being amended, especially regarding Section 22, to make it possible for prizes to be rolled over for two consecutive draws.

“The country is ready, the social environment is ready and policy is ready for this new lottery model,” said the GLO director, adding that the new lottery would help solve the underground lottery betting and lottery overpricing problems and divert betting money, estimated at more than 100 billion baht a year from bookmakers to the state.

Maj-Gen Chalongrat further said that the GLO would issue new lottery tickets for the September 1 draw starting on August 14-16. The new ticket is prized at 80 baht apiece will replace the current one which has two attached pieces in one ticket.
