Special Branch police probe background of man who set himself on fire

Special Branch police are investigating the background of the male foreigner who set himself on fire in front of the Iranian embassy in Bangkok on Friday.

The unidentified man is being hospitalized with serious burns.

Police found a note left in front of the embassy by the man which reads “don’t vote” in English and Arabic. A plastic bottle which was used to contain gasoline and a lighter were found at the scene.

Quoting eyewitnesses, police said that the man stood in front of the Iranian embassy and then shouted in Arabic language before he doused himself with gasoline that he brought with him and set himself alight with a lighter.

Police guarding the embassy then used a fire extinguisher to put off the fire and then alerted rescue workers to rush man to the nearest hospital.

It was reported that police went to the victim’s lodging hoping to find evidence which could help determine his nationality and name.

Iran is preparing for an election but it is not known whether the election was the motive for the man to inflict harm on himself.

Given the location and the suggestion of an election, it was probably Farsi and not Arabic.

If one wants to make a protest by burning themselves up like a romantic candle then be my guest.

    I simply felt zero sympathy.

I wonder if the same type of things were said about this man(who was successful in his quest):

In June of 1963, Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk Thích Quang Duc burned himself to death at a busy intersection in Saigon.

At least he chose to do it in BKK and not here where our NHS money would have been wasted on him.

^My dad worked in Royal Free A&E burns unit in the 80s.

Not a pretty sight when the fresh meat rolls in. Their methods of treatment weren't for the faint hearted either

Yep. Seems a few here think Iran is an Arabic country too.
