Mrs. D, told me a pharmacy affected by the sinkholes - declined compensation from the government in favor of giving it to more seriously affected victims of the recent earthquake in Kumamoto, etc..

I got stuck in Ueno one time with not enough Yen for the train fare to Utsonomiya. A couple of banks wouldn't exchange Thai Baht and there was no ATMs for which I could use my card. At the airport yes, but I didn't want to go all the way there and then return to Ueno again just to use an ATM.

I stopped and asked a business-guy in the street if there was an ATM nearby on which I could use my card. He pulled out his wallet and took out 3 x 10,000yen notes (approx. 10k baht) and offered me them. I refused and explained that I had Thai money but couldn't exchange it. He then told me to try a bank just round the corner. I did, and successfully got rid of my Thai Baht for some Yen.
Weird or what?

No wonder the Thais love them.

Brings back many memories of when I lived in Japan. I visited Kyushu quite a few times. Kumamoto is a nice town if you haven't been there yet. It has a nice park and an okay castle. Not what I would call spectacular but just a very pleasant town. Famous for Basashi should you want some.

I can safely say Japan is my favorite place I have ever lived outside of my home country. Fukuoka I only ever stayed in one night and that was a drunken blur but seemed nice enough.

If you go to Japan your experience will be vastly improved if you know somebody there. so in this case if you plan to go my advice would be to mooch off of and burden NZdick as much as possible.

555 nice one justme... you guys are welcome to mooch off us, no burden whatsoever... Fukuoka is my favorite place in Japan - sister city of my hometown of Auckland.. hit us up next time you come over - I need to find a new bunch of friends there, as I only know my wife's family.
