Neither do I recall a single political innuendo or statement in the film. Nor do I recall any reference at all to this Che' being Che Guevara until a footnote at the end. Beautifully photographed film though- I enjoyed it.

Che just rode on Castro's coat-tails. He appeals to the romantics "Doctor from wealthy family gives it all up to help the down-trodden of the world". He was a lousy revolutionary when it came to military operations, totally inept. But, he was a doctor, not a soldier. He'll be remembered for the iconic image you see on so many T-shirts, not his accomplishments.
