Thread: A small home what I am having built in Kanchanburi Province

Hello there.

Right, so quite a few things have changed in my life since I was regularly posting on TD. I won't go into the details but I need to build a small house in a small village in Kanchanaburi province. So that's what I'm doing.

To be fair what I'm doing is funding the build and being sent picture updates as due to work and some surgery I haven't been back since things started properly with the construction at the end of October.

I will be back there for most of January to do the important stuff like choose what is going to be fitted in the kitchen.

I can't remember how to do a picture thread so bear with me on this. I'm not the man I used to be......

Anyway here goes......

So we bought this land in the village . I mean she bought this land.

230,000 baht for 1.5 rai

The view is not bad if you ignore the electricity pylon....







After doing some good luck rituals the construction started at the end of October. This is how it looked when I was last on the scene.

As we (I) wanted a place that was fairly small and economical (my budget is 1 million baht for the land plus the house), I searched on TD and found DD's posts on free house plans.

This house is based on the 2 bedroom one bathroom plan here:

The carport area is now a room inside the house, and I am adding a roofed 'porch' area out front. This is for me to sit outside, drink beer and shout obscenities at passers by.

I reckon the cost of the house will be 750,000 baht by the time we are finished, then add in the price of the land then that's my 1 million baht budget.

Beautiful view, if you ignore the poles (as you say). Perhaps if you grow some Bougainvillea over them it might hide them.

So now come some pics taken in the last couple of months of construction.

Yes I know it all looks a bit amateurish and is definitely being built to Thai standards but I'm too far away to argue - and I'm always wrong when I criticise anything Thai.

Your nice little house is coming on well.

Looks as though your new place is a bit isolated. Will you have enough cars coming by for entertainment? Wouldn't be much fun if you can only get to shout obscenities once an hour or so.

Looks promising SBF. Any thoughts on guttering for water collection? Indoor/outdoor kitchen, Thai/western style?

PS Good to see you back and hope the surgery was not too serious.

After living in Singapore for almost 20 years I am looking forward to a bit of isolation.

But the good news is that there is a Singapore army base nearby and I can shout Hokkien obscenities at the National Service men as they trudge by on the road outside.

Welcome back SBF. I like this house and the price is with-in most guys budget. Leaves room for extras added later without breaking the bank.

I really like your house, simply because for me they are for sleeping in mainly and the large builds ain't my go.

Small and functional with quality fittings is the go.

Hot water, A/C, Internet , car and motorbike. Job done.

What you have there is something I would build verandahs off and make nice outside living areas. Nice area up there.

Great price 37 K AUD.

Jesus. I might even build one at that price, simply play money innit.

Not yet - there's quite a few things I have got to give thought to when I'm back in January.

Any suggestions would be good.

exactly terry, a small footprint to meet your needs is all it takes.

pity about the electric poles, but after a couple of weeks you wont even notice them.

interested to see the finished job.

Are you retiring? Or is this for monthly respite during jobs?

There are not too many "players" who elect a small abode. Most elect a mansion even when a hovel will suffice.

So, what is the real deal?

I figured the new girlfriend but was complicated, but the job too!?

I would recommend western kitchen indoors with good ventilation and a Thai kitchen under a small verandah at the back.
The GF cooks all her stinky Thai stuff outside, and I use a worktop oven and a slow cooker indoors.

No my job isn't too complicated. I would like to retire but I still have mouths to feed in Singapore for a few more years.
And another mouth to feed in Kanchanaburi anytime soon.....
