THIS one I'm trying to end nicely on page 9 but with BKKBILL and Roobarb sabotaging my nice ending it could go on for over 20 Pages !!!!!!!!!!

What do you mean 'what a horrible Roobarb car'?

It's the Vanden Plas version I'll have you know.

And what does that mean? Well, cop a load of this Wasp - it had leather seats with reclining backs, a walnut effect dashboard and a nylon headlining as standard. In 1974 the bog standard Allegro was being knocked out at a thrifty £1,150, however to get this beauty on your driveway you'd be parting with about £1,950.

    Horrible Roobarb car indeed...

This is what The Telegraph had to say about them in an article last year:

    ....

    The Austin Allegro at 40

As it turns 40, Andrew Roberts looks at the Austin Allegro's place in motoring history.

"It's a car which we think will appeal not only to the sophisticated British public but to the sophisticated European public," said British Leyland's MD Donald Stokes on the launch of the Austin Allegro in 1973.

Four decades later, the car with the Quartic "square" steering wheel is often deemed to typify all that was wrong with Britain in the 1970s, together with hyper-inflation and every record by The Rubettes. Note: see below

The tasks facing the Austin Allegro were formidable; to replace the BLMC 1100/1300 range, one of Britain's most successful family cars, and to rival such Continental offerings as the Fiat 128 and the Citroën GS.

Millions were spent on the Allegro's development and the resulting car offered a wide choice of engines, a smooth ride from its Hydragas suspension, safe handling and ease of servicing.

The entry-level 1100 was no more Spartan than a poverty-specification Vauxhall Viva of the time, while the flagship 1750 SS ("Sports Special") was very well appointed – and any Allegro was far more sophisticated than a Ford Escort.

Unfortunately, the 1750's five-speed gearbox was vague and notchy – saloon bar wags likened it to stirring a bag of marbles with a knitting needle – and the Allegro's styling could best described as "controversial". Harris Mann's original ideas had been progressively ruined by corporate interference and to many the resulting coachwork had all of the verve of a Mint Toffo that had been allowed to melt slightly.

The Allegro took the Estate Car of 1974 title, although it managed the rare achievement of being even more aesthetically challenged than the saloon. But it was with the Vanden Plas Princess version that the Allegro achieved its true surreal glory. The VDP's leather-trimmed interior was complemented by a pseudo-traditional radiator grille to create the ideal vehicle for social climbers with limited overdrafts.

A Series 2 Allegro made its debut in late 1975 with improved rear legroom and an enhanced ride, but the damage to the Austin's reputation was terminal. It did not matter that the infamous stories of rear screens falling out when the car was jacked up only occurred on a few occasions – the fact that it had genuinely happened was the body blow.

Combined with body leaks and, with far more potentially lethal consequences, wheels falling off, faults served to destroy the Allegro's image.

Its reliability issues were so notorious that BL went so far as to commission a jaw-dropping half-hour training film entitled The Quality Connection, in which lack of care and attention resulted in well-known character actors being killed by runaway Allegros:

Four years later, sporting motorists were offered the Equipe, an Allegro of Allegros, from its metallic silver coachwork with orange and red stripes to its black spoiler and porous alloy wheels. Volkswagen Golf GTI drivers were unimpressed.

Then in 1980 came the Allegro 3, one that gave drivers "Vroom" according to a deeply desperate TV advertising campaign – but by then no one was listening. Production ceased in March 1982 after fewer than 700,000 examples in nine years, but BL dealers still had more than enough Allegro stock before the launch of the Maestro in 1983.

The Allegro was not the car that killed British Leyland, because many of the corporation's problems stemmed back to the Austin/Morris merger of 1952, but its failure in the marketplace was arguably more devastating than that of the Marina.
The latter was never more than a hastily developed stop-gap model, but the Allegro was a car intended to be a major contender in world markets. If it is a joke, its partial but very real legacy of closed factories is a hollow one.

The Austin Allegro at 40 - Telegraph

    ....

Note: the Rubettes are no relation of mine. Nonetheless here's them in their full brown and orange '70s splendour for you:

    Not so fast Sonny Jim.

Ending your prospective build thread with a fascia of doubtful provenance I fear.

Unless I'm much mistaken that's a photo of the Neptune Pool at Hearst Castle, and the fascia in your photo is an original Roman temple front that was shipped over to the US by Hearst so that he had something to hang his towels on.

The lads down the station will be keeping a close eye on your upcoming build Mr. Wasp.

It gives me a good excuse to get another Allegro onto your thread...

Torpedoes from a determined assailant I see .

In the past I have even recommended you , Roobarb , and that other villain Bettyboo , as excellent operators of disassembled writing .... prime perpetrators of wandering well away from any actual Construction talks .
My best example always being how you two and the other usual suspects can take up 3 pages on a ludicrous discussion of the best colour for a water pump .

    Fine .

    Amusing .

But how you can take my civilised Roman King ending into a monologue about the almightily crap Austin Allegro ( featuring The Rubettes ) with a final flourish of an Allegro serving with a Police force is .... even for me .... a touch bewildering/depressing .

" How can this happen ? " I ask my yellow and black self .

And of course it runs back to that other warped member of the TD society .... the pig-slayer in chief ..... warbling on about some old crow over-constructing some roof trusses which have cost an arm and a leg though they are covering a house worth only about two fingers.

You must have a lot of time on your hands on Sundays . Or in your fingers .
I even like " Sugar Baby Love " as it happens .
But I'm sure you can employ your spare time more worthily than cruising through TD Threads looking for an opportunity to kamikaze the finer pieces of writing .
I thought that was Necron's job.

    OK --- Provenance .

YES it's the swimming pool Randolph Hearst built and for which he imported that actual ancient Roman Temple front .
And the Provenance of the photograph is that it was posted by Bettyboo on my Thread on the 3rd January this year in a rare moment of good taste ( he having issued other photos of equally aged tarpaulin garages ) .

Now ..... for the final big finish .......... with Provenance .

I am remodelling my plans , keeping to the restrictions to an 8 metre by 15 metre build but carrying in my mind at all times the architectural imprints one can take from Walhalla .

Provenance ...... Constructed by Mad King Ludwig of Bavaria , just outside Regensburg on the banks of the Danube between 1830 and 1842 and spectacularly featuring amongst its many sculptures the bust of Bruno von Warendorp – the former mayor of Lübeck.

    There you are .
Bringing some rare and much-needed culture to TeakDoor and a wonderful note on which to end this Thread . Oh yes .

I’m not sure what WASP is on about Roobs but as you can see by my avatar I’m quite fond of Austin's.

Well, possibly of the Healy persuasion. Unfortunately and through very poor judgment I sold the little darling to amass funds to enable a marriage to my first wife, not realizing that was the beginning of a long and costly downward journey.

Now I am only commenting on this because the name Austin seems to be being disparaged here. Well that and I would be very disappointed if WASP lost another star misrepresenting fascias and Neptune Pool at Hearst Castles.

    Sonny Jim indeed!

Indeed, Austin Healy 3000. Very nice indeed. Was it a Mk II or a Mk III?

I reckon your fate was already sealed. Owning old British cars is often a long and costly downward journey. Perhaps though in retrospect hanging on to the Healy would have been more fun.

I'd suggest you stick with the original. The Parthenon looks much more like a typical Isaan build. If you look carefully in the photo below I suspect you'll find the ground littered with Lao Khao bottles...

    Lightbulb

I left this Thread with all the designing planning being wasted as we suddenly had a buyer for the land just on its own without a house on it .

    A serious buyer .

But a serious buyer in Thailand means he seriously wants it but he seriously doesn't want to pay for it . Seriously .

This guy wanted the land for a bus parking area . We always said 500 000 and wanted 480 000. He offered 480 000 .

    Excellent .

    " Cash "

    Excellent .

    And he turned up yesterday evening . With ........ 40 000 ....... . !!!

Wanting to hand over 40 000 and then 2 000 every month for the next 18 years or so !
So he seriously did want that land ....... but when he said " Cash " he actually should have said " Some Cash " .

And on this basis there is no deal at all .
I can even see him paying for 2 months and then saying " No have monee wott cann I doooo ? " in that plaintive whiney nasal way .
And then try and get his buses off the land !!!!!

    Disappointing tis .

Returning I am to zee Sketchup.

    "Serious buyer"
Don't be disheartened old chap the concept doesn't exist here. The wife has been trying to sell her macbook pro laptop and a nikon camera she doesn't use.
Lost count how many "serious buyers" she has had contact her over said items.
It goes something like this. "Yes i definitely want item but too pang can you discount ?" So she drops the price a bit." I buy yes definitely that price I come soon with money please don't sell I want item yes that price"

We wait for serious buyer to come and purchase item. And we wait. Wife contacts "serious buyer".

" sorry wife say no can buy too pang, car is broken blah blah blah, but can buy if you discount ( normally to half the original asking price ) and can you deliver to nakhon arsehole its only 250 km away very close please bring item I serious buyer"

    Hi BB.

It seems they cannot move on beyond the primitive " market " mentality of never paying the price agreed on .
And in some ways I feel sorry for them because so much stuff .... maybe 95% of stuff is fake . Even medications .
Regularly I have to post loads of Paracetamol to Thailand - paracetamol and Ibuprofen that's been bought in Sainsbury's in England ...... because I had half a dozen boxes there once and I gave tablets to people with headaches , toothaches any aches ... and they were astonished because it worked !

I happen to think that Paracetamol from Big C probably IS Paracetamol so maybe there is a placebo thing going on here .... but still you see " HITACHI " drills being sold at the side of the road for 2000 Baht .
Nice clean new ' Hitachi ' drills but they burn out inside a week because they're Chinese and they've got plastic gearwheels inside .

    Land is different .
You can't fake land - and there's a fairly predictable price depending on location - although you can sell land and they discover later they've bought a different , smaller piece of flooded land 300 km away .

This guy was making a proper purchase though . ( I'm not going inside a Thai jail for anyone ! ) ...... and the whole arrangement was clear .

But yes --- I think he thinks it is WE who " reneged " and that we will come back and agree the deal .
And if we did that he would drop it to 1000 a month . And stop paying after 4 months .

We will not be coming back and agreeing ANY deal other than a lump sum payment.

I have to agree with terp that this is a wonderful explanation of how seriously the Thais don't take any prices !
For her first months in England Missy just couldn't accept prices as fixed .
The price at Boots the Chemist would be £2.99 and she would say " Will pay £2 - iss enuff ? " at the Checkout !!!!
And if they were to say 'OK ' she was ready to offer £1.50.

They never did say ' OK ' .

First of all apologies Wasp if all this is taking your thread slightly of topic. But today something rather strange occurred.

We had contact from a serious buyer for the Wife's camera.

We took item 7km to serious buyer.

He was very happy with item and paid asking price.

He lives in a Wat and is a monk.

If you need to sell something sell it to a monk

Oh, I hear you...And that was a good post to read...And it is a very good lesson to learn from...

I know of a very hardworking older Thai couple who had the rug pulled out from under them when they discovered, the hard way, that the land they had purchased was sold to them by somebody who didn't own it...They had already built their house and lived in it for years, until the real owner showed up...
