I just looked at my other renovation Thread " Not A House Building Thread " and I had finished that Thread on Page 4 .
But with various people chipping in it didn't actually finish until Page 17 !!!!!!!

THIS one I'm trying to end nicely on page 9 but with BKKBILL and Roobarb sabotaging my nice ending it could go on for over 20 Pages !!!!!!!!!!

And what does that mean? Well, cop a load of this Wasp - it had leather seats with reclining backs, a walnut effect dashboard and a nylon headlining as standard. As it turns 40, Andrew Roberts looks at the Austin Allegro's place in motoring history.



"It's a car which we think will appeal not only to the sophisticated British public but to the sophisticated European public," said British Leyland's MD Donald Stokes on the launch of the Austin Allegro in 1973.

Four decades later, the car with the Quartic "square" steering wheel is often deemed to typify all that was wrong with Britain in the 1970s, together with hyper-inflation and every record by The Rubettes. Note: see below

The tasks facing the Austin Allegro were formidable; to replace the BLMC 1100/1300 range, one of Britain's most successful family cars, and to rival such Continental offerings as the Fiat 128 and the Citroën GS.

Millions were spent on the Allegro's development and the resulting car offered a wide choice of engines, a smooth ride from its Hydragas suspension, safe handling and ease of servicing.

The entry-level 1100 was no more Spartan than a poverty-specification Vauxhall Viva of the time, while the flagship 1750 SS ("Sports Special") was very well appointed – and any Allegro was far more sophisticated than a Ford Escort.



Unfortunately, the 1750's five-speed gearbox was vague and notchy – saloon bar wags likened it to stirring a bag of marbles with a knitting needle – and the Allegro's styling could best described as "controversial". Harris Mann's original ideas had been progressively ruined by corporate interference and to many the resulting coachwork had all of the verve of a Mint Toffo that had been allowed to melt slightly.

The Allegro took the Estate Car of 1974 title, although it managed the rare achievement of being even more aesthetically challenged than the saloon. But it was with the Vanden Plas Princess version that the Allegro achieved its true surreal glory. The VDP's leather-trimmed interior was complemented by a pseudo-traditional radiator grille to create the ideal vehicle for social climbers with limited overdrafts.

A Series 2 Allegro made its debut in late 1975 with improved rear legroom and an enhanced ride, but the damage to the Austin's reputation was terminal. It did not matter that the infamous stories of rear screens falling out when the car was jacked up only occurred on a few occasions – the fact that it had genuinely happened was the body blow.

Combined with body leaks and, with far more potentially lethal consequences, wheels falling off, faults served to destroy the Allegro's image.

Its reliability issues were so notorious that BL went so far as to commission a jaw-dropping half-hour training film entitled The Quality Connection, in which lack of care and attention resulted in well-known character actors being killed by runaway Allegros:





Four years later, sporting motorists were offered the Equipe, an Allegro of Allegros, from its metallic silver coachwork with orange and red stripes to its black spoiler and porous alloy wheels. Volkswagen Golf GTI drivers were unimpressed.

Then in 1980 came the Allegro 3, one that gave drivers "Vroom" according to a deeply desperate TV advertising campaign – but by then no one was listening. Production ceased in March 1982 after fewer than 700,000 examples in nine years, but BL dealers still had more than enough Allegro stock before the launch of the Maestro in 1983.

The Allegro was not the car that killed British Leyland, because many of the corporation's problems stemmed back to the Austin/Morris merger of 1952, but its failure in the marketplace was arguably more devastating than that of the Marina.
The latter was never more than a hastily developed stop-gap model, but the Allegro was a car intended to be a major contender in world markets. If it is a joke, its partial but very real legacy of closed factories is a hollow one.

Not so fast Sonny Jim.

Ending your prospective build thread with a fascia of doubtful provenance I fear.

Unless I'm much mistaken that's a photo of the Neptune Pool at Hearst Castle, and the fascia in your photo is an original Roman temple front that was shipped over to the US by Hearst so that he had something to hang his towels on.

The lads down the station will be keeping a close eye on your upcoming build Mr. Wasp.



It gives me a good excuse to get another Allegro onto your thread...

I’m not sure what WASP is on about Roobs but as you can see by my avatar I’m quite fond of Austin's.

Well, possibly of the Healy persuasion. Unfortunately and through very poor judgment I sold the little darling to amass funds to enable a marriage to my first wife, not realizing that was the beginning of a long and costly downward journey.

Now I am only commenting on this because the name Austin seems to be being disparaged here. Well that and I would be very disappointed if WASP lost another star misrepresenting fascias and Neptune Pool at Hearst Castles.

I reckon your fate was already sealed. Owning old British cars is often a long and costly downward journey. Perhaps though in retrospect hanging on to the Healy would have been more fun.

I'd suggest you stick with the original. The Parthenon looks much more like a typical Isaan build. If you look carefully in the photo below I suspect you'll find the ground littered with Lao Khao bottles...

I have to agree with terp that this is a wonderful explanation of how seriously the Thais don't take any prices !
For her first months in England Missy just couldn't accept prices as fixed .
The price at Boots the Chemist would be £2.99 and she would say " Will pay £2 - iss enuff ? " at the Checkout !!!!
And if they were to say 'OK ' she was ready to offer £1.50.

They never did say ' OK ' .

First of all apologies Wasp if all this is taking your thread slightly of topic. But today something rather strange occurred.

We had contact from a serious buyer for the Wife's camera.

We took item 7km to serious buyer.

He was very happy with item and paid asking price.

He lives in a Wat and is a monk.

If you need to sell something sell it to a monk

I know of a very hardworking older Thai couple who had the rug pulled out from under them when they discovered, the hard way, that the land they had purchased was sold to them by somebody who didn't own it...They had already built their house and lived in it for years, until the real owner showed up...
