    Random Bike Trips

As I wind down my time in Thailand I wanted to share some pics from some of the bike trips I've taken.

My first five years in country I hoofed it or took public transport, the last five I had four bikes and had a blast ridding around Thailand. Made several trips from BKK/Pattaya to Chiang Mai, a couple times on 'The Mini Beast", my trusty Honda 100 CZi

Small bikes will get you there, it just takes a bit longer.

RT 109, heading east after a night at Fang. A good argument for always traveling during the day

If I hadn't spent so much money on palatial estates, I would have bought a CBR500..

This is the Lake at Phayao. Great little city and If I would have had it to do over again, I'd have tried living there for a couple of years.

Funny how Thailand can be a small place. I was ridding to Mae Sai and stopped at one of the ubiquitous road side hotels, 350 baht for an individual bungalow and free coffee!

The next morning I met a German guy there, we had a nice chat about bikes, then we each headed out. About a month later I saw him in Phayao! I asked him for an el cheapo hotel and he guided me to where he was staying, a clean but basic room for 250 baht. He rode a Honda Phantom with over 70,000 kms on it and was hoping to 100,000 on her before buying another second hand bike.

He based himself in Pattaya but said he was on the road 'a lot.' I asked him how long this bike trip would be. He thought for a moment then allowed:

"About six months, maybe a bit longer..."

This was another Fang trip, I took RT 1249 off RT 107 to Doi Ang Khan.

Looking from Thailand over to Burma. No fighting that day

The village just before the Thai Army camp. Not much happening...

The road up to Doi Ang Khan was fun. Great curves!

Yep, always alone except for two trips. The GF went with me once on the Mae Hong Son Loop and once I rode with a buddy to Mae Sai.

I loce the freedom to go anywhere I want, any time I want

Taken from a view point over looking the Mekong. Great ride following RT 212 to Nong Kai

    This was the view point

    [

Backing up a bit to a hotel view in Chiang Khong. One night at an old Teak Mansion/Hotel and a great view of the river, looking over to Laos

My first bike- 'The Mini Beast', a 2008 Honda Wave CZi; kick start, 57 Km/L, 36,000 out the door from Mityon on Pattaya Sai Song . Oh, and she didn't cry for benzene and would happily purr along on gasohol, even E20. Yeah she was one of the first fuel injected models.

I rode her to Chiang Mai a couple of times, Koh Chang, Bangkok, Pai, Mae Hong Song loop. Had a blast. Great little bike.

This was my 200 baht bungalow, at Pai

Maybe I was lucky -or unlucky- but my Thai GFs were always nagging me to let them go on a bike ride. Would sit behind and never complain,

But mostly they wanted to keep an eye on me, 555!

    The temple at Mae Sariang

Great view from my room at Mae Hong Son

    Thanks!

My second bike, a 2008 Honda CBR150; bought her second hand from a Brit in Korat. He liked the bike, but had arthritis in his hands, which made using the clutch painful. Even though the bike was a 2008, the original Bill of Sale listed the new purchase price of 52,000, in 2010. Slow moving inventory?

I talked to the owner several times by phone, he seemed OK, so I hopped on a bus -after a fun two days in BKK- rode to Korat, bought the bike and rode her back to Pattaya

A really fun bike to ride; I replaced the original, cracked and brittle, IRC tires with Michelin Pilot Sportys made a big difference cornering

    Some fantastic views from Samoeng

You had the right attitude while you have been in Thailand. Nothing better than a bike ride in a beautiful country to calm the soul. Too bad you are leaving. Hopefully you are going somewhere else other than the states.

Having a smallish bike here in Thailand makes the most sense to me. Don't get me wrong, I love big bikes and speed but that formula spells danger here in Thailand. Too many soi dogs, cattle, crazy motorbike riders and rediculous drivers to be sitting on a big machine when braking is everything here. You did it the right way for your tours. Your last bike is the perfect bike for Thailand IMO. The 250 has enough grunt to get you up a hill and pass with confidence while delivering good fuel consumption. I am a little biased about the Honda CBR 250R since I own one.

If I were back in the US, I would have a much bigger bike and would stretch its legs on the long strait roads while touring. A much different story here where one has to anticipate everyones next move on the road and be ready to apply the brakes at a moments notice. Totally different riding here than what I have done in the past which is why I think the 250-300cc range is perfect (don't beat me up too bad FailSafe and Rigger).

    Nice pics by the way.

    Thanks Rick.

I'm in Central America now- and I still get the urge to ride

I had four bikes in Thailand- all Hondas... a 110 CZi; a 150 CBR and two CBR250s. (one 250 was stolen in Pattaya)

I enjoyed ridding in Thailand, but it was dangerous. Somachai just doesn't give a fuck...

On the bright side my survival skills did improve

Nice. I will make it to Latin America at some point. For now, Thailand is my home and I do not see that changing, but one never knows. I would like to see Cosa Rica, Belize and possibly Nicaragua. Maybe even Panama.

How do you find Guatemala so far?
