Canberra (AFP) - The hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 will focus on the southern part of the existing search zone after a new clue to the plane's possible location emerged, Australia said on Thursday.
Fresh information suggested the jet "may have turned south" earlier than thought, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said.
The detail came to light following "further refinement" of satellite data and as investigators attempted to map the plane's position during a failed attempt to contact it earlier in its flight path.
"The search area remains the same, but some of the information that we now have suggests to us that areas a little further to the south -- within the search area, but a little further to the south -- are of particular interest and priority in the search area," he said.
His comments came as Australia and Malaysia inked a memorandum of understanding in Canberra over the next phase of the hunt for the plane, which disappeared on March 8 with 239 people on board en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
The signing followed a meeting between the two nations and China's Vice-Minister of Transport He Jianzhong.
    - Phone call traced -
The plane is believed to have crashed into the southern Indian Ocean far off the west coast of Australia after mysteriously diverting off-course, but a massive air, sea and underwater search has failed to find any wreckage.
Experts have now used technical data to finalise its most likely resting place deep under the Indian Ocean and are preparing for a more intense underwater search, beginning next month.
It will focus on a dauntingly vast stretch of ocean measuring 60,000 square kilometres (23,000 square miles).
Truss said that during efforts to map MH370's location when Malaysia Airlines tried to contact the jet, it was "suggested to us that the aircraft may have turned south a little earlier than we had previously expected".

"After MH370 disappeared from the radar, Malaysia Airlines ground staff sought to make contact using a satellite phone. That was unsuccessful," he said.
"But the detailed research that's being done now has been able to... trace that phone call and help position the aircraft and the direction it was travelling."

The minister said investigators still believed MH370 was somewhere on the search zone's seventh arc, where it emitted a final satellite "handshake".
"It remains on the seventh arc -- that is, there is a very, very strong view that this aircraft will be resting on the seventh arc," he said.
Truss added that ongoing mapping of 87,000 square kilometres of the ocean floor had uncovered "quite remarkable geographical features", including the discovery of new volcanos up to 2,000 metres (6,562 feet) high.
"In one place in particular... the sea depth is as little as 600 metres, and then falls away in just a very short distance to 6,600 metres," he said, indicating the complex task ahead.
Malaysia's Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai promised to provide "more regular updates and information" about the search when they arise.
Liow, who replaced Hishammuddin Hussein as transport minister in June, added that Malaysia had so far spent about Aus$50 million (US$47 million) on the search and would match Australia's financial commitments in the tender costs for equipment.

After suffering two major air tragedies, Malaysia Airlines flights seem to be having a tough time getting passengers on board as pictures posted on social websites show near-empty planes and deserted terminals.

Tweets of passengers traveling via Malaysia Airlines flight revealed desolate check-ins lines and deserted airplanes, with some even enjoying the extra space to lounge, New York Post reports.

One of the passengers and Twitter user, @WanPingCoombes, flying a Malaysia Airlines plane, posted a picture of herself along with her family on August 17 with the background showing a completely vacant plane.

Meanwhile, Julia Macfarlane, a kin of another Malaysia Airlines passenger took to Twitter to announce that her mother had safely flown on the struggling airline.

The airline has been losing huge amounts of money on a daily basis in the wake of the mysterious disappearance of MH370 and the downing of MH17. Following continuing losses, the airlines have almost doubled the amount of commission it offers to travel agents from 6% to 11% in Australia.

He further wrote that operations were losing about 1.6 million each day, the report said.

Strange enough, if one discounts the view that MH370 landed in nthe Indian Ocean or crashed into it, most of the other indications given by INMARSAT's "ping" map indicate that the plane probably landed somewhere in Chinese controlled territory.

    http://www.fastcolabs.com/3028569/th...ts-destination

THE INMARSAT-3F1 DOPPLER DATA DO NOT EXCLUDE A NORTHERLY FLIGHT PATH FOR MH370
    2014/04/02

“It is possible to disprove a theory, but never to prove one; no matter how often a theory has given a correct prediction in the past, a single (repeatable) counterexample invalidates that particular theory… a documented counterexample is now available to disprove the assertions of many writers…” Luis Alvarez (1976)

The search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has concentrated upon the Indian Ocean due to an assertion by Inmarsat personnel that the Doppler data could only be fitted by a southerly route of the aircraft. The announcement of this was made by the Malaysian Government on 24th March, with it coming an expression of certainty that the aircraft must have crashed unseen into the Indian Ocean.

I assert here that the assertion by Inmarsat is wrong. I do not assert that the aircraft definitely took a northerly route. However, I present evidence hereunder that a northerly route cannot be excluded on the basis of the satellite data, and that a northerly track remains viable in terms of what the satellite data can tell us.

Note that I make this assertion despite a lack of access to certain data that Inmarsat will only give to the “proper authorities.” My only sources of information with regard to the satellite data are:

    (a) The graphic/map issued by the Malaysian Government on 15th March, showing the ‘ping ring’ with elevation angle from aircraft to satellite of 40 degrees; and

    (b) The following graph, drawn up by Inmarsat and issued by the Malaysian Government on 24th March.

FFS ENT, it's on every other news outlet on the planet. People in the remotest corners of Chad know about the phone call analysis by now..

Anyway, the satellite guys explained in considerable detail why the northern arc was eliminated, months ago. The plane did not go to China....or Diego Garcia...get over it...

The guys didNOT explain why the plane didn't take the northern arc, other than if it had, someone would have noticed, which is total poppycock.

As for the phone call being used to track the plane, give a reference if you know one.

Well, I'm fcuked if I'm going to waste time drilling down (again) through a thousand pages trying to show how they explained it, but they did and it had nothing to do with people noticing it.

As for the sat-phone story, it's all over the news....so it should not be too hard for an ardent researcher like yourself to find it.....

Just to be nice....here's a random link to the CBC version....just to be as neutral as possible.

Oh FFS ENT's found another conspiracy theory looney tunes website, so it be true.

Oh, hang on. No it isn't, it's more bullshit from a rent-a-quote scientist trying to lure people to his website to buy his books.

Talking out of the back of your neck again harry?

FFS, get over it! The plane never did run out of fuel and crash-landed in the Indian Ocean.

It was deliberately steered in a complex manoeuvre, from way-point to way-point and last tracked (supposedly by cell-phone) heading south from its last radar contact. Then it disappeared heading out over the Indian Ocean, south, or even west of south, and who knows which way it turned then after reaching the next way-point over the Indian Ocean. North? Due west? Who knows? But it was under someone's control all that time, not heading off in a straight line to its supposed doom when it ran out of fuel.

Inmarsat have pings all the way down and they know exactly how much fuel it had on board. The attempted calls have made them rethink the southern trajectory, that's all.

That's how they narrowed down the search area.

The fact that everyone ignored it because of the pings they heard from dolphins or whatever did not shake Inmarsat's analysis of the data. They have always maintained it ended up in the same (60,000sqnm) area.

However, since you are a self-proclaimed seismologist, metalllurgist and archictect, I suppose it's a natural stretch that you are now a fucking satellite expert because you read a website.

Anyway the good news is that Malaysian Airlines are now coping Singapore Airlines.
Tight CEO cooperation between the the two, as Singapore Airlines tries to flush out the rot in Malaysian airlines.

Much to the chagrin of ENT and his looney tunes mates, the search has been progressing well, and 58 sites have already been identified where there are objects that merit closer inspection.

SEREMBAN: The search for Malaysia Airlines' flight MH370 will be focused on 58 spots in a 60,000 sq km area of the Indian ocean.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the locations were identified in a latest survey by the international search team.

He said in the survey conducted at the arc-shaped priority area, about 1,600km from Perth, the search team found that there were 58 spots where hard objects were lying on the seabed.

"Although the hard objects can be anything, from rocks to ship wreckages or a plane, the finding gives us where to focus in the next stage of search.

"An underwater search using deep sea equipment will be conducted at these spots soon," he told reporters at a press conference today.
    More on the search:

This is the latest chart of the priority search area for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 prepared for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
A survey of the area in the southern Indian Ocean by two ships using multi beam sonar is almost complete and will provide an accurate contour map of the sea bed which in places is up to six kilometres deep.
At the end of September, three ships, the Equator and Discovery owned by contracted search company Fugro Survey Australia, and the Malaysian-contracted vessel GO Phoenix will begin the search that could finally answer the world's biggest aviation mystery.

The ships will each pull side scanning sonor devices known as "towfish" through the water approximately 100 metres above the seabed attached to armour-plated cable about 10 kilometres long using the new charts to maintain the optimum height and avoid newly discovered underwater volcanoes or other geological features.
There is now an official website where search updates will be posted.

Of course ENT won't be interested; he believes it isn't there because he read it on a nutjob website. And if they do find it, no doubt he'll claim the CIA/MSS/Mossad put it there.

    Maybe not for much longer, maybe you should take up the offer;

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — Malaysia Airlines (MAS) resorted to flight giveaways and bargain deals to attract Australian and New Zealand customers after photographs of empty flights went viral.

The beleaguered national carrier, which suffered two fatal plane crashes this year, was giving away a dozen return flights to Kuala Lumpur for its “My Ultimate Bucket List” competition, Australian news site news.com.au reported yesterday.

“With unbelievable savings, these deals are a very competitive offering as we build a stronger Malaysia Airlines,” MAS regional senior vice president Lee Poh Kait was quoted as saying.

The “My Ultimate Bucket List” competition reportedly starts on Monday and is open for online bookings until year-end.

MAS was reported by news.com.au as saying that passenger numbers dipped 11 per cent in July from last year.

The Malaysian airline reportedly launched a sale with “astounding new online offers” for passengers from Australia and New Zealand starting from AU$495 (RM1,461.50) for a return economy class airfare ticket to Kuala Lumpur.

Did you actually read the text or is this your cognitive dissonance kicking in again?

I really would like to be proved wrong, in reality.
I will eat My words if this aircraft is found in My lifetime.
When Qauntas are now allowing cell phone contact over the Indian Ocean, South Africa to Perth with signal, a long established route, that says it all.

    Malaysia Airlines promotion 'atrocious'

    5:00 AM Thursday Sep 4, 2014

A Malaysia Airlines promotion targeted at Kiwis and titled "My Ultimate Bucket List" has been labelled atrocious by MH370 widow Danica Weeks.

The airline - which also hit headlines when MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine in July - invited travellers from New Zealand and Australia to enter the competition, which kicked off on Monday and offered them the chance to win an Apple iPad or return trip to Malaysia.

They were asked to answer the question, "What and where would you like to tick off on your bucket list, and explain why."

Mrs Weeks, whose New Zealand husband Paul was one of 239 people lost when Flight MH370 disappeared in March, said she was "blown away" by the airline's insensitivity.

The Perth mother of two said many of the airline's interactions with families of the victims were "insensitive".

"This is just another promotion that they've come up with. It's just atrocious - why would you say that?

"We're sitting here wondering [and] they've been entrusted with our loved ones and can't tell us where they are."

Auckland University senior marketing lecturer Bodo Lang said Malaysia Airlines had made a "very poor choice from an advertising stand point".

"Other airlines would have got away with this but Malaysia Airlines should have shown ... awareness in this situation.

"Competitions are an often-used tactic in many product categories. Travel is no exception and the idea of being able to win a trip to an amazing location lends oozes [of] positivity and that is exactly what Malaysia Airlines needs at this point. And passengers, of course."

The competition was not going to help the airline's reputation, Dr Lang said.

"They have had two fatal incidents in one year. While Malaysia Airlines may have had very limited control over why these incidents happened, they were in control over how they handled the aftermath and this could have been handled much better.

"In the long run, Malaysia Airlines will have to gradually rebuild its trust with passengers and the public. The unfortunate naming of the competition would have made this task again more difficult for the airline."

Last night, Malaysia Airlines issued a statement saying it had "withdrawn the title of a recent competition available to Australia and New Zealand ... as it is found to be inappropriate at this point in time".

"The competition had been earlier approved as it was themed around a common phrase that is used in both countries. The airline appreciates and respects the sentiments of the public and in no way did it intend to offend any parties."
