TV and Internet options for Nakhom Pathom ?

OK, as some of you know, we are building a house in Nakhom Pathom. It's just about finished now and I'll actually be staying there when I go over in a few weeks.

I'm trying to figure out what TV and internet options there are. I've gotten spoilt by my cable tv & internet coming from one supplier, here in the USA.

As far as TV goes, the wife says UBC is about 2,000 baht/month and cable is not anywhere nearby for us to hook up to. I don't speak that much Thai, so watching just local channels is not really going to work for me.

What else is there or, if I have to use UBC, what package/options can you recommend ? I like movies, info (Discovery Channel for example), news, etc. I don't need/want a bunch of sports channels.

Internet. I have to have it to run my business. Again, what options do I have for internet for my laptop ? I have a spare wireless router that I was thinking of bringing over, if needed. I know my wife will want to use her iPad and we both have wifi for our phones. I'll have to change the AC power supply/transformer for the router, it looks to be 110 AC only. But I figure I can find that easily enough over in Thailand.

I'm open to suggestions for both TV and internet. I'm not a computer geek, so keep it simple please !

    Thanks,
    Steve

Truevisions satellite is what you want for TV.

    TrueVisions - Packages

As for internet, it all depends on how far you are from a service.
Landline for adsl+ or WiNet tower. (WiNet is a broad area line of sight wifi offered by ToT and Cat)
If those two are out you are fucked.
You only options otherwise are satellite internet on Ipstar which is flakey and expensive while being not very fast or a 3g dongle, which is fine right up until your 5 gig package runs out.

^^ OK, thanks. Not thrilled with the True satellite options. I really don't want all the sports channels.

If I do have to go the 3g dongle, what brand can you recommend ? Are they easy to use? I ask this because I had trouble with one in Oman ~3 years ago. Never got it to work.

I might be able to make it last a bit, as I don't download movies and music. The wife will be PO'd she can't use her iPad though.

I can't find the English language CAT website.

If you want English TV true is pretty much your only option.
Or, if you can get broadband bung in the free thai sat for the missus and just download what you want to watch.

USB works, but the 5 gig cap disappears in a heartbeat. After that it's shit. You just wont be happy if that's al you can get.....
CAT website is shit too, TOT is better (a bit), just go to your local TOT or CAT office, whichever serves your area and ask what your options are.

There is a local nakorn Pathom cable company as well. 300bht per month. Loads of channels, with about 3 in english. Get it for the missus.

True is not a option (True wanker ).
The cable that Nighog is talking about is OK 380 bpm I use this as it has Australia network.

In theory you could just buy a satellite dish and decoder and get all stuff illegally but you kind of have to be a nerd (like me ) to configure everything.

I paid for the top package for about a year. It was crap - service and programing.

Your best bet is to download torrents of things you want to watch. I have thousands upon thousands of hours of things I want to watch minus the commercials and the cost.

Talk to the forum member Thetyim if you need help with that.

I was reading, on some other website, about this hundreds of channels for free. But I understand almost all of them are Thai language, which does me no good. I was in Bahrain last month and the damn sat tv in my service apartment had over 1000 channels available. Most of them were in Arabic and seemed to be about the Koran. I eventually found CNN, France 24 (English), Al-Jazeera (English) & BBC. It was a boring few days for sure. At least I had wi-fi.

Koetjaka, that's my problem, I'm not really into sat tv, K-bands and all that other code talk.

I'm not impressed by the offerings of True Gold package for 2,000 baht.
To watch stuff on the internet, I'm going to need a good internet connection, which may not be available.

I'd love to know what system they use down in Hat Yai. I see channels there, such as Fox News, you can't get in Bangkok.

^ True Gold is 890 baht.
Less if you bundle your phone and internet.

    Where ?

The weblink you gave me before shows True Gold at 1412.97 baht plus monthly equipment fee of 155.15 baht (Can I just buy the equipment to save on that ?)

    True Vision Gold

No mention of bundling. I think we would need cable for that, like I have in the USA, and the wife says cable "no near".

Gone up then. I only pay 890.

You can bundle your mobile to get it cheaper I believe.
In any event, if you can't get broadband, True is your only option for Discovery Channel, movies etc. 2000 for the platinum package is not a bad deal if you watch a lot of tv.

The cheap Thai cable has the Australia Network, but it's 3 channels of crap.

An no, you can't buy your own decoder and dish.

If you can get decent Internet then all TV and films can be found free on the net. Why pay for two

That's the big if ! I don't know what my internet options are yet, they may be very limited. I know some shows, from the US, can't be seen in Thailand, unless you know all those little tricks like torrents, VPN, etc.

OK, I'm hearing some interesting things about hot spot devices, while back here in the USA. I could buy one here and use a plan from the USA that should work in Thailand. But I would think True or someone else, in Thailand, would have a better/cheaper plan and the hot spot devices would be cheaper in Thailand anyway.

Can anyone recommend a good hot spot device and a plan ?

    Thanks in advance.

Just a quick tip, if you can get the internet, try ezytv.com to download plenty of new and finished tv shows from USA, some Oz and British shows. You will need to download bittorrent to download them, just google it, it's free. Try it from wherever you are now, it is brilliant. New shows are on it a day after they are shown in the US.

    Rebbu,
That's an interesting link (especially if you're a UK expat - which I'm not), but I have to have a good internet connection for that right ? I'm still trying to figure out a good, reliable and affordable internet connection first.
The wife already has the free That satellite tv channels. Once I'm there on a more regular basis, I'm going to want some English language stuff to watch. I'm not too interested in sports programming.

One thing I'm going to try, the next time I'm in Thailand is my T-mobile TV app on S4 device. When I was in Nigeria recently, I could use the internet to listen to radio stations back in the USA. Now, I want to see if I can watch US tv shows on my S4, using the T-mobile TV app.

But I'm very interested now, in a hot spot setup for the house.

    From the site.
Most modern houses, condos or apartments in Thailand & Asia will have an internet connection of over 3MB, which is the minimum requirement to live stream our service.
I get an average of 13 MBPS. I was watching it this morning. HD channels buffered with no problems. There's also a record button on the player. I also saw that there's an android set top box for sale on the website for 6 thb.
I'm not British either but they carry channels from the US and Oz also.

Try this link for good quality movie downloads also, you will still need bittorrent.

I'm sorry, but we have no internet connection at our brand new house. Which was one of the things I was asking about. Right now, it looks like I will have to buy some type of data plan from True or 1-2 Call, etc. This is what I have been doing ever since we settled into the house. It's not perfect, but it works for now. I'd like to find something better, if possible.

    Thanks nonetheless,

True is your only option for decent tv.

As you lack a landline and therefore broadband you are basically screwed.
The best dongle (mobile) plans are too expensive and don't offer a big enough 3g allowance to rely on them for TV. Most cap out at 3gig and then it's like 1000 baht per gig topup.

Does anyone near your house have a landline?
One option if they do is for you to pay for their broadband connection and use a wifi extender to get the signal to your place.
