Australian Dies of Heart Attack in Kalimantan Motocross

Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan. An Australian man died in the thick jungle of Indonesian Borneo during a weekend motocross event, officials said Monday.

Rescuers on Sunday retrieved the body of Michael Adrian Headley, 35, who died of a heart attack during the rally, and rescued 20 local riders, event organizer Harin Tasmida told AFP.

"He had a heart attack and died instantly. He seemed to have forced himself beyond his physical ability," Tasmida said.

The riders were forced to spend the night in the jungle after heavy rains muddied the track.

"Many motorcycles broke down on the trail and riders had no choice but to stay overnight in the jungle without food and water, many suffering from fatigue," local rescuer Trembli Vemberiyanto said.

Tasmida, however, denied the event was poorly organized, saying they responded as quickly as possible.

"Nobody went missing. They only got stuck in the jungle because of the muddy terrain as it was raining a night before. We sent them food and water," he said.

The 140-kilometer (87-mile) "Balikpapan Two Days Enduro" began Saturday with around 800 participants in the city of Balikpapan, where the Australian lived with his family and worked for a mining company.

The event was part of the city's 116th anniversary celebrations.

The organizer said Headley had undergone a physical examination in Singapore two months earlier and had been in good condition.

You donīt die if you push yourself over the limit, done it quite a few times. He had an heart failure or something similar.

Unless the event organizer is a medical doctor he has no clue what this man died from. Surprising the Jakarta papers would run a headline like this. An autopsy will hopefully be done. RIP guy.

35 is pretty young for a heart attack, though not unheard of.

And this report says he was found suffering exhaustion. Sounds like the organiser is panicked and making up tales...

Do we HAVE to have reports of every bloody foreign death in Asia on here? I know we don't have to read em but man has heart attack at 35 not exactly interesting, unless you knew him of course.

I figured it was interesting, particularly given a few threads here lately have been about motorcross and biking.

You don't like it? Don't open it, the thread title couldn't be more clear, could it?

Mick was my friend. He would have turned 35 today. Fit, hard case, good guy. They choppered out 70 people from the bog they sent them to. There was still 20 missing this morning. 3 Indos died as well. A single file track for 800+ bikes and no water stops. It's wet season, in the jungle, they pushed or dragged their bikes half the time.

Another mate did CPR for 20 minutes before anybody else showed up. The army rescue guys carried him out as well.

Mick left a lovely wife & a 5 year old son.

Damn, sorry to hear it Grumpy. The papers say the organisers told participants to take a short cut if they were not able to do the whole route, sounds a bit negligent to me.

Was he part of the footy club? I think the Bintangs will be sending an email of condolences if so.

    RIP.

He was a member of the Bears, not a player though.

His body has been flown back to Aussie for autopsy.

What you're seeing in the papers is an arse covering exercise by the organisers. It was more of an alternate route for "more experienced" riders. Everybody took it. There' still a heap of abandoned bikes out there in the jungle.

I was on the turps with him Friday night.

    Certainly sounds like it.

Update: 70 of 90 Missing Motorcycle Racers Found in Kalimantan

Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan. Rescuers have managed to find 70 motorcycle racers previously reported missing in the depths of an East Kalimantan jungle, but 20 others remained missing as of Sunday evening.

“About 20 others are still declared missing. The evacuation team has continued to search for them by tracking the route set by the steering committee of the [race],” the head of the Kutai Kartanegara office of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Darmansyah, said on Sunday.

He corrected a previous figure that put the number of race participants at 805, saying there were only about 700 of them, and only 193 people took the route through Tahura forest in the East Kalimantan district of Kutai Kartanegara.

At least one man from Australia died on Saturday during the two-day enduro racing event.

Headley Michael Adrian, 35, was among racers participating in the “Balikpapan Two Days Enduro 2,” which kicked off on Saturday to commemorate the 116th anniversary of the East Kalimantan city of Balikpapan’s founding.

Adrian was believed to have died of dehydration in the middle of a 124-kilometer extreme track connecting Balikpapan and the capital city of Samarinda through the depths of the Tahura jungle.

Mugiono, an official with the East Kalimantan office of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), earlier said Adrian's remains were taken early on Sunday morning to Kanujoso Djatiwibowo Hospital in Balikpapan for an autopsy.

“We don’t know for sure yet whether he was found dead at the location or died during the evacuation,” Mugiono told the Jakarta Globe.

Some 40 Basarnas officers and dozens of Army officers were dispatched to find those who remained missing, he added on Sunday afternoon, at which time there were 90 racers whose whereabouts were still unknown.
