'Starving' North Korean parents 'eating their children' in famine-hit state

'Starving' North Korean parents 'eating their children' in famine-hit state
    Mon Jan 28 2013

A starving father in North Korea has been executed for murdering his two children for food, reports from the secretive state have claimed.

A 'hidden famine' in the farming provinces of North and South Hwanghae is believed to have killed up to 10,000 people and there are fears that incidents of cannibalism have risen in the country.

The grim story is just one that has come to light, as residents are battling against starvation after a drought hit farms and shortages were compounded by party officials who were confiscating food.

According to the Daily Mail, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has spent huge amount on two rocket launches, despite reports of food shortages in the country and concerns that 10,000 people have died in a famine.

Undercover reporters from Asia Press told the Sunday Times that one man dug up his grandchild's corpse and ate it, and another man boiled his own child for food.

An informant said a father killed his eldest daughter while his wife was away on business and then killed his son because he was the witness to the murder.

When his wife returned the man told her they had 'meat', but she became suspicious and contacted officials who discovered part of the children's bodies.

Undercover reporters said food was confiscated from the two provinces and given to the residents in Pyongyang.

The Sunday Times also quoted an official of the ruling Korean Worker''s party as saying that 'in a village in Chongdan county, a man who went mad with hunger boiled his own child, ate his flesh and was arrested'.

United Nations officials visited the area during a state-sponsored trip, but local reporters said it is unlikely they were shown the famine-hit areas.

It is not the first time that reports of cannibalism have come to light in the country.

In May last year, the South Korean state-run Korean Institute for National Unification said that one man was executed after eating part of a colleague and then trying to sell the remains as mutton, the report added.

Cannibal horror as 10,000 North Koreans starve
    Michael Sheridan
    Additional reporting: Shota Ushio, Tokyo
    January 28, 2013

A FATHER in North Korea is reported to have been executed by firing squad after murdering his two children to eat them during a "hidden famine" that may have killed more than 10,000 people last year.

In a litany of horrors documented by undercover reporters, another man dug up his grandchild's corpse for food and a third, driven mad by hunger, boiled his own child and ate the flesh.

The stories were collected by Asia Press, a specialist news agency based in Osaka, Japan, which has a network of "citizen journalists" inside North Korea and is regarded as credible.

Dozens of interviews and clandestine reports have led it to conclude that "considerable numbers of people" - probably more than 10,000 - have died in North and South Hwanghae provinces, south of Pyongyang, the capital.

North Korea has not officially confirmed any deaths. A government-supervised mission by the UN last September reported a food surplus in both provinces, yet the clandestine reporting depicts a pattern of misery and death while Kim Jong-un, the country's leader, spent lavishly on banquets and missile tests. One informant, an official in South Hwanghae, said: "In my village in May, a man who killed his own two children and tried to eat them was executed by a firing squad.

"While his wife was away on business he killed his eldest daughter and, because his son saw what he had done, he killed his son as well. When the wife came home, he offered her food, saying: 'We have meat.'

"But his wife, suspicious, notified the Ministry of Public Security, which led to the discovery of part of their children's bodies under the eaves."

In its detailed 12-page report, Asia Press identifies reporters and sources by pseudonyms. "Particularly shocking were the numerous testimonies that hit us about cannibalism," said the agency's Jiro Ishimaru.

Gu Gwang-ho, one of the reporters in North Korea, wrote: "There was an incident when a man was arrested for digging up the grave of his grandchild and eating the remains."

In May in Haeju, South Hwanghae's main city, a man who had killed 11 people and sold the meat as pork was executed by firing squad.

"In a village in Chongdan county, a man who went mad with hunger boiled his own child, ate his flesh and was arrested," said a mid-ranking official of the ruling Korean Workers Party.

These incidents reportedly took place as Mr Kim, 30, marked his ascent to power with a new image, a glamorous wife and two costly rocket launches.

Last week, he followed these with a defiant pledge to retaliate against the latest UN sanctions by staging a third nuclear weapons test "aimed at the United States".

Early last year, officials confiscated food from farm collectives in North and South Hwanghae to supply the army and reward the privileged residents of Pyongyang for their loyalty to the Kim dynasty, the undercover reporters say.

But then a drought struck and, from April to June, farmers and their families in these "breadbasket" provinces began to die.

"One family was completely wiped out, everyone died of starvation, while another family gave up hope of living and killed themselves," said Gu.

A hospital administrator said there was no wood for coffins or cremations, so the dead had been wrapped in straw mats and tipped into an unmarked common grave.

"The farming villages I visited from May to June were in such a tragic state that I had to cover my eyes," the party official added. "There was no food at all. Casting out elderly parents or abandoning children was nothing rare."

"Political waste" on celebrations and extra rations for Pyongyang were key factors, according to the reporters.

Mr Kim, a plump, beaming figure, ordered new apartment blocks, imported equipment for a fairground and a dolphinarium, staged lavish festivities and appeared at a pop concert with his pregnant wife.

"The smooth transfer of power . . . was the top priority," according to the reporters. The famine in the Hwanghae provinces has passed its peak, the reports say. It is probable that when the UN team visited the area in the autumn, it was shown no evidence of it.

Japanese government sources say North Korea has developed a compact nuclear weapon that can fit on to a missile capable of reaching the US's west coast. The device may be equal in force to the atomic bomb that destroyed the city of Nagasaki in 1945, the sources told the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

As Mr Kim celebrates his first year in power, it is clear thousands have paid for his adventures.

North Korean parents eat their children as famine worsens

    Jan 28, 2013

Pyongyang - Reports say a North Korean man has been executed after he killed his two children for food.

He was reportedly put to death by firing squad after officials discovered he ate his children in the 2012 famine in which thousands of North Koreans died.

According to The Independent, a report compiled by Asia Press titled "Rimjin-gang: Reports and Surveys from North Korea," says starving citizens of the DPRK are eating "children and corpses" as UN tightens sanctions spearheaded by the United States.

Asia Press reportedly recruited a network of "citizen journalists" in North Korea.

According to the Daily Mail, the Asia Press report says the father killed his eldest daughter while his wife was on a business trip. He also killed his son who witnessed the murder.

The South China Morning Post reports that an informant told Asia Press:

"While his wife was away on business he killed his eldest daughter and because his son saw what he had done, he killed his son as well. When the wife came home he offered her food, saying ‘We have meat.’

But his wife, suspicious, notified the ministry of public security, which led to the discovery of part of their children’s bodies under the eaves."

Reports by citizen journalists employed by Asia Press indicate a "hidden famine" in the rural provinces of North and South Hwanghae, south of Pyongyang, in which 10,000 people are believed to have died.

According to Jiro Ishimaru of Asia Press, in a 12-page report, "Particularly shocking were the numerous testimonies that hit us about cannibalism."

Another Asia Press citizen journalist, Gu Gwang-ho, said: "There was an incident when a man was arrested for digging up the grave of his grandchild and eating the remains."

The Daily Mail reports undercover reporters from Asia Press said a man exhumed his grandchild's corpse for food while another boiled his own child for dinner.

A man was quoted as saying: "In my village in May, a man who killed his own two children and tried to eat them was executed by firing squad."

Cannibalism is also reported in the sprawling network of North Korean prison camps such as Camp 22, with an estimated 50,000 inmates.

The Daily Mail reports The Sunday Times quoted an official of the ruling Korean Worker's party as saying: "In a village in Chongdan county, a man who went mad with hunger boiled his own child, ate his flesh and was arrested."

Another official was quoted as saying that the fields were in such bad state as a result of drought that he was forced to avert his eyes.

The disturbing stories of starvation due to food shortages are being reportedly compounded by party officials who confiscate food.

Undercover reporters from Asia Press said food was confiscated from two provinces and given to the residents of the capital Pyongyang.

While citizens die of starvation, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is expending huge resources on rocket launches.

There are concerns that the North Korean leader is planning a nuclear test in protest at UN Security Council sanctions after recent rocket launches.

It is not the first time that reports of cannibalism have come out of the country.

The South China Morning Post reports that the Yonhap News Agency said in 2012 that North Korea executed three citizens for cannibalism.

Also in May last year, the South Korean Institute for National Unification said one man was executed after he ate body parts of a colleague and tried to sell the rest as mutton. There are also similar reports from 2011.

There was a severe famine in North Korea in the 1990s called "the Arduous March," during which between 240,000 and 3.5 million people reportedly died.

The South China Morning Post reports North Korean defectors say during the famine, North Koreans traded in human flesh, presumably from corpses of famine victims.

According to The Independent, while millions die of starvation, the UN has extended sanctions already imposed on the country after nuclear tests it held in 2006 and 2009.

The sanctions are spearheaded by the United States, backed by Japan and South Korea.

The new sanctions are in response to Pyonyang's decision to continue with plans for long-range rocket launch.

The North Korean regime insists its tests are part of a peaceful program to place a satellite in orbit.

North Korea has reacted to threats of sanctions with threats of its own.

A statement by the North's Committee for Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, said: "If the South Korean puppet regime of traitors directly participates in the so-called UN 'sanctions', strong physical countermeasures would be taken."

No kidding. Indeed "citizen journalism" has tallied 60,000 Syrians dead - killed by that evil Assad - and no one seems to even bother saying "these can't be verified" (except BBC). Even the UN is using that figure now. Are Assad's forces attacking rebel held towns and cities? Of course. Are they conducting atrocities? Likely. Is the other side full of shit and feeding the media what it wants? Certainly. Fact is of course that people are hungry and could well be starving in N Korea. Are they eating their children? Would you?

In 2007 Asia Press began publishing a magazine entitled News from Inside North Korea Rimjingang in Korean and Japanese.

It was started by a Japanese and Korean co-joint editorial group, a chief editor as a Japanese journalist, Jiro Ishimaru, and Korean representative editor as Choi Jin I (an author and North Korean defector).

Rimjingang secretly operates with journalists and reporters hidden within North Korea.

The magazine aims to bring outside news to the people of North Korea.

The reporters, who are North Korean civilians and refugees who had media training in China provided by the Asia Press North Korea reporting team, are able to use techniques such as hidden cameras to create their articles.

Reporters learn journalistic principles as well as PC skills.

After the fourth issue of the Korean edition was released, Choi Jin I left the group and began releasing own periodical called Imjingang in the Korean language in Seoul in April 2009.

One of the major reasons of the "divergence" was said to be that Imjingang intended to be rather a communication tool for defectors and North Koreans while Rimjingang aspires to be a project purely for journalistic activities and to foster journalists and journalism in North Korea.

Since then, Choi Jin I has made Imjingang a completely independent magazine which is no longer connected with Asia Press.

Rimjingang published in Japanese/English in Japan and Imjingang published in South Korea have no ongoing relations.

Rimjingang's reports are smuggled out of North Korea via China and printed in Japan.

Their pictures and footage have been delivered to major newspapers and magazines over the world such as The Washington Post, The Economist, The Nation, The Wall Street Journal and the Japan Times.

    Rimjingang'
s reports were quoted by the New York Times, and Newsweek magazine.

For TV, it was aired on various stations such as BBC (UK), Channel 4 (UK), KBS (South Korea), ARD (Germany), Al-Jazeera (Arabic Satellite), ABC (Australia), TBS (Japan), TV-Ashahi (Japan), etc.

In 2010, the magazine published a video of a woman foraging for food in North Korea which received worldwide attention.[1]

Currently the Japanese edition of the magazine is published twice a year. In October 2010, Rimjingang released its first English hardcover edition.[2]

The name Rimjingang is also the North Korean name for the Imjin River, which crosses the demilitarized zone and flows into South Korea from the North.

One of the magazine's North Korean journalists chose this name to symbolize sending the thoughts of the North Korean people to their brothers and sisters in the South.

Always should be suspicious and vigilant as to what passes as sensational or realistic information these days.

    Consider the sources.
Think and examine [hopefully] independently with a jaded eye.
