Thread: Taking bicycle to Vientiane

Wish to take bicycle and a couple of suitcases with me. What's the best way?

Can fit bike on most of the buses to get to Udon, if not Nong Khai. Thinking of getting train from Nong Khai to cross into Laos.

Any ideas?

btw, not a Trek or Cannondale - just a 10k bike picked up here, but much better wheels than available in Vientiane.

Buy a folding bike and bring as extra luggage!

Bought my bike in Nong Khai

take the train to Nong Khai

take the front wheel and pedals off - wrap it in cardboard and packing tape and you should be just about able to stow it with you

Public buses have no problem taking bikes as long as you take the front wheels off. Trains are also no problem, no need to do anything, they will just jam it in the guard bogey. No need to box a bike on either.

so your point is that I just get to Friendship Bridge and a rickshaw, tucktuck or whatever will appear to transport my bags and bike across, or that I push my bike along with my bags through customs?

My first post was a bit of fun,buy a bike here then either ride the thing or as others have said take it on public transport.

Yes I would take the train to cross over from Nong Khai to Laos......but that might be a bit difficult

from Nong khai or even Bangkok, why not just ride it???

made it, bike and all

broke down bike. for overnight bus they charged me and extra 200 Baht for bike, and on border crossing bus they charge 40 baht and stored bike and baggage in back.

I must say I have been enjoying it to the max every day!

Suitcases and a bicycle,, well i never.

Post the cases and ride the bike to the bridge and put it on the bus
no need to remove front wheel.
Carry what you need whilst you wait for cases to arrive

Billy the Kid: you're probably right about the trip over the bridge. but for the 8 hour bus ride to Udon, very happy to have had the bike packed correctly, pedals removed and everything.

overnight suitcase because it had wheels, but not that handy. here for a while and didn't want to be doing laundry every other day.
