Things to do in Chiang Mai on a Budget

A friend of mine is flying from the states to go backpacking in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

He's travelling up to Chiang Mai from BKK before going to Laos and has asked me about things to do. I could help him with bits and pieces in Bangkok but not CM.

Anyone got any ideas on places to go, things to see, food that kind of thing.

Any help much appreciated.

I would highly recommend he stretch's his budget and hire a car to get around the Triangle. So many beautiful places to visit.

Dead foking awesome place first time up. Piss cheap once he has his wheels, split the cost with another scank back packer preferably a cracking looking Swedish one.

I'm doing it again myself in a few weeks.

Considering its his first time he could just be a tourist, grab a brochure and start walking around checking out markets and tourist shit.

If he ain't been here before he will think he is in Disneyland, the awesome looking woman up there will blow his mind.

Doi suthep is always impressive.

Don't worry to much. he will love the foking place especially now with the cooler weather.

If he don't wont to rent a car tell him to get the bus and hit the road, he will meet many like minded people and make friends.

The North is fantastic this time of year. Gagging to get back up there my self.

Agree. The way to go as a first time visitor. Walking around lessor tourist frequented areas is also great.

Sorry mate, ive never been to chiang mai, chiang rai has always intrigued me more with the elephant trekking and white water rafting.

If there was one thing i would want to do in chiang mai, i would have to say the night safari

Theres the tiger kingdom , where you can go into a tigers cage and sit with the tigers.
The Sunday market at Tapae gate is worth a visit

I've only been in CM for a year but we enjoyed Doi Suthep, go with your own transport and then after the tourist stuff, drive through and keep going there is a beautiful camp site with a nice little restaurant - great views.

I also liked the Samoeng loop, basically a very scenic drive out of CM to Samoeng, stop there for lunch (and strawberries if in season) then back via Mae Rim, can be done easily on a hired scooter.

wiang kum kam is quite interesting, get there on a Friday afternoon and enjoy a local market, even splash out on a horse drawn tour. They also have bicycle tours.

Sunday night market worth seeing once.

If he's on Facebook there is a very good group run by a local lady called All About Chiang Mai.

Yes, sometimes peoples pet dogs takes a bite out of people as well .
With all the risks in Thailand, getting eaten by a tiger is way down on the list
