    Yorkshire sculpture park

We woke up this morning and was surprised to find yet another reasonably good day, so we decided to head off to the Yorkshire sculpture park which is just a few miles down the road.

    Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Being a typical tight arsed Yorkshireman, I decided we weren't going to pay bloody £7.50 for parking and being from the area, I knew about a lovely place to park up and walk in.

    Looking towards where we parked.

All we had to do was walk through a few fields and we`d be there.

Before we go any further, I ought to mention that Im no arty type. I was just there for the scenery and a good walk. That said, all the sculptures certainly added to the enjoyment of the day.

First up, we came across these. I wasnt really sure what to make of them to be honest.

Outside one of the indoor galleries.

Inside, they were exhibiting sculptures by a chap called Miro. I wasnt supposed to be taking any photo`s but, I snapped a few just for you TD`ers.

In collaboration with the artist’s foundations and family, YSP is proud to present the first major UK exhibition of sculpture by Joan Miró, one of Europe’s most important 20th century artists

Once outside again, there are wonderful views that can be had from the cafe balcony.

Little Ast was keen to run off and explore some of Henry Moore`s work.

YSP showcases one of the largest display of open-air bronzes by the artist in Europe.

Created between 1955 and 1985, the bronzes represent the peak of the artist’s career when he worked on a monumental scale and particularly for the open air.

    From the front.

YSP is set in the grounds of Bretton hall which is or was part of Leeds university campus and the Bretton estate has been around since the 14th century. The main house that stands today was built around 1700.

    Onwards to the chapel.

Over the bridge and across the lake.

Then we came across this place.

This fella was just there mooching around the woods.

An island full of nesting Herons and visiting Canada geese.

Dennis Oppenheim, a key figure in the US Land Art movement, was an influential international artist who created sculpture, installations, interventions, performances, actions, happenings and photographic works. His work was characterised by a constant shifting of style and ceaseless creative output.

Trees (From Alternative Landscape Components), a flamboyant, large-scale work, is on display at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and is the first time that sculptures by Oppenheim have been shown in the UK.

Sophie Ryder's association with YSP began in 1986 during her residency, immediately after graduating from the RA Schools. In 2008 YSP held a major exhibition of her work at Longside Gallery and in the open air, after two important pieces were kindly offered on long term loan.

The great Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz makes a welcome return to YSP this autumn with a powerful installation of new works.

Some aborigine inspired art for Ausie friends.

Despite having an absolutely wonderful day and great weather considering we`re in the middle of winter, we`re all absolutely knackered, so its time to relax with whats left of the Christams port.

    Chin chin all.
I aint superstitious, but I know when somethings wrong
I`ve been dragging my heels with a bitch called hope
Let the undercurrent drag me along.

Park itself looks lovely and scenic , some nice photos too !
best is little Ast looking at the statue.
Those type of sculptures don't do much for me though ,
most just seem like they are trying a little too hard

Tbh, a lot of them I just don't get, but, they do seem to blend in well with the scenery.

Interesting thread and some great pictures. Imagine it would look even better on a summers day.

As for 7.50 to park the car !! Avoiding payment is not being tight arsed it's just common sense !!

Nice thread and a good day out for the little 'un. It's nice to confront them with something unusual in a different setting. Did he ask many questions?

Please add to it if you find them. From what I understand, there are only a few permanent sculptures, like Henry Moore, the rest move around the world.

Perhaps I`m a philistine too because thats kind of what I was thinking. Not bad eh, getting paid for doing things like that?

We`ll definitely have to go back there in the summer and update with some more photo`s. I used to go to summer camp there when I was a kid, and dont remember seeing so many sculptures then.

Not wanting to sound pretentious but, the sculptures really did seem to compliment the landscape, or was it vice versa.

There arent many things I would miss, but, that is one of them.

He did yes. "Daddy WTF is that". Only kidding, he did seem in awe of them and you could almost see the cogs turning, wondering what it was about. I let him make his own ideas up as to what they meant.

He did mate yes. Little Ast loves nothing more than being outside and free to run around and explore.

Thanks all for the comments and greens.
