British man killed in countdown party
SURAT THANI - A 23-year-old British tourist was killed by a stray bullet during a fight involving a group of Thai men in a bar at Koh Phangan's Haad Rin Beach early in the morning of New Year's day.

Stephen Ashton was with a group of friends and three hundred other tourists in the 2013 countdown party at a pub and restaurant named Zoom Bar when he was shot by a home-made gun shortly after 4am, Pol Col Kittakarn Kramomthong, chief of Koh Phangan station said.

According to witnesses who spokes to police investigators, two groups of Thai customers numbering between five and seven got into an argument which escalated into a fistfight in the crowded bar. One of the groups ran out of the bar and one man turned and fired a shot back into the bar, causing panic and chaos.

The bullet hit Ashton in the torso, seriously injuring him. He was sent to Ban Don International Hospital and was later pronounded dead.

Ashton was visiting the island with four or five friends and had stayed at Pink Bungalow on Haad Rin.

Police launched a search for a 26-year-old man identified as Ekkapan Kaewkla, or Lae Kaewkla.

About noon, a team of police led by Pol Col Kittakarn searched for the suspect who was thought to have gone into hiding up in the mountain and arrested him in tambon Ban Tai. Mr Ekkapan was found with a home-made gun believed to have been used in the shooting.

Mr Ekkapan denied he fired the shot that killed Ashton but admitted he had fought with another group of men when partying at Zoom Bar.

Pol Col Kittakarn said police had several witnesses and enough evidence to prosecute the suspect. Royal Thai Police adviser, Pol Gen Rachata Yensuang, Pol Lt Gen Kittisan Dejsoonthornwat, the Provincial Police Region 8 deputy commissioner, and Surat Thani provincial police chief Kiattipong Khaosum-ang will interrogate the suspect at Khao Phangan station at noon on Wednesday, he added.

BANGKOK: A 22-year-old British tourist was shot dead as he danced at a New Year party on one of Thailand's most famous islands after a fight between rival Thai gangs erupted on the beach, police said on Tuesday.

The holidaymaker was killed when a Thai man opened fire at a bar on the island of Koh Phangan in southern Thailand in the early hours of the morning.

"He was shot in the side while he was dancing on the beach," local policeman Lieutenant Colonel Somsak Noorod told AFP, adding the area had been packed with revellers during the evening's New Year celebrations.

Police believe the gunman was aiming at members of a rival gang.

Phangan is a resort island in the Gulf of Thailand neighbouring Koh Samui and draws thousands of backpackers to its famous full moon parties.

The 22-year-old, named locally as Stephen Ashton, was killed as he danced with friends at a beach bar on the popular island of Koh Phangan.

He is thought to have been caught in the crossfire when a fight erupted between two local gangs.

Witnesses said that two groups of Thai youths got into an argument which escalated into a fist-fight at around 4am. As one of the groups ran from the bar, one man turned and fired a shot back inside.

Ashton was shot in the torso. He was rushed to Ban Don International Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Local police spokesman Lt Col Somsak Noorod said: "He was shot in the side while he was dancing on the beach."

The shooting took place at the Zoom Bar on Haad Rin Beach. Ashton was staying with a group of four or five friends at the nearby Pink's Bungalow.

The suspect, named as Ekkapan Kaewkla, 26, was reportedly found in possession of a homemade gun when he was arrested. It was claimed he had gone into hiding in the mountains.

Ekkapan admitted he had fought with another group of men at Zoom Bar but denied firing the fatal shot, according to the Bangkok Post.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are aware of the death of a British national in Thailand on New Year’s Eve. We are providing consular assistance to the family.

Poor old septic Shanna at TV must be having a torrid time of it deleting all those posts about chickenhead scumbags on her precious paradisial island. Mostly, anything bad that happens next to her shanty resort can be attributed to those nasty incomers from up Isaan or, at a pinch, from Surat Thani but her own chickenhead husband's tribe of deeply ethical and reverentially proud islanders are usually too precious to get involved in anything of disrepute and if they do it's usually because some farang has provoked them in the usual way by staring too hard in the wrong direction. One wonders if it was a local lad but doubtless we'll hear in good time.

Great publicity though and should generate a lot of interest among those bored with the usual holiday pursuits and who hanker after a bit of gunplay. Perhaps they should a run a press offensive in the US of A: " Fed up with the snow and same old automatic rifle fire in Connecticut? Well, git yore ass down to KPH, Land of Smiles, Siam and have some fun in the sun and stop a home made one in the guts - only $2,500 for 10 days, full board and body bag included ( body repatriation insurance $250 plus taxes incl wreath ).

I rather think it's about time the various embassies upped their insipid advisories and actually warned folk about just how fucking dangerous the average Thai fuckwit truly is.

Sounds implausible he would have followed. He's the family mafia in KPH and those chickenheads ain't likely to mix too easily with the Sino/Thai mafia up there.

Same-Same with Sabai Jai (Joe Cummings), a TV Mod, who ring-fences Pai (North Thailand btwn BKK and Chiang Mai). He (apparently - according to Drummond) runs a guesthouse and/or restaurant up there and was quick to defend the drunken cop there who shot the Canadian guy to death and seriously injured another using his duty sidearm while off-duty. Sabai Jai was deleting posts, etc., to eliminate the nasty reports about Pai. Then of course that same cop later shot and killed an 18 year old pregnant girlfriend later on. Power corrupts. Cummings will need to live with that. Welcome to Pai. How would you like your eggs? Scrambled? Of course we have a room for you. Did you read about us on TV?

British new-year reveller shot dead at Thailand beach party - Asia - World - The Independent

British new-year reveller shot dead at Thailand beach party

Stephen Ashton, 22, caught in the crossfire between rival gangs of youths on party island

    Jerome Taylor

    Tuesday 01 January 2013

A British holidaymaker was shot dead in Thailand hours after welcoming in the new year with friends at a beach party.

Local media on the party island of Koh Phangan said Stephen Ashton, 22, was caught in the crossfire between two groups of Thai youths.

Mr Ashton, form south London, was celebrating at Haad Rin, a stretch of beach famous for its “full moon” parties. Shortly after 3am an argument broke out between a group of locals at Zoom Bar, one of the many beachside party venues that line that stretch of shore. As one of the men walked away from the bar he reportedly pulled out a gun and began firing into the crowd, hitting Mr Ashton in the side of the chest.

“He was shot in the side while dancing on the beach,” a police spokesman told the AFP news agency. Reports suggested a Thai man was also injured.

Mr Ashton was taken to hospital but could not be revived. A nurse told The Independent: “Doctors spent 40 minutes trying to resuscitate him but there was nothing they could do.”

Dawn Mason, 48, a neighbour of Mr Ashton’s family, described him as a “very normal, likeable young man”. His family moved to the upmarket area of Purley, south London, about three years ago, she said. “They’ve always been very nice neighbours. I went to the house today and the family just seem in complete shock.”

Mr Ashton’s mother, Diane, is flying back to the UK from a skiing trip after hearing of her son’s death, Ms Mason said. Mr Ashton’s family said they were too distraught to speak tonight at their home.

Meanwhile, friends left tributes to Mr Ashton on social networking sites. Aaron Kelly, writing on Mr Ashton’s Facebook profile, said: “Horrible news, be good up there mate”.

The killing is likely to raise fresh concerns over the safety of tourists on Koh Phangan, an island once renowned for hippy beach parties that has since transformed itself into one of South East Asia’s party capitals, pulling in hundreds of thousands of westerners. The island had been bracing itself for a deluge of extra tourists over the weekend because the full moon – which fell on Friday – coincided with the New Year celebrations. According to local tourism officials, 80,000 people turned up for Friday’s full-moon party and a further 100,000 were expected to see in 2013 across Haad Rin.

The influx of tourists has brought much wealth to Koh Phangan but the island has also acquired a reputation for violent crime. The Foreign Office’s travel advice for Thailand warns that revellers are particularly vulnerable at full-moon parties in Haad Rin.

According to the Bangkok Post, police gathered a search party to look for the gunman and eventually arrested a 26-year-old man. He was reportedly found in possession of a handmade gun and admitted arguing with others at Zoom Bar but denied firing any shots. Thai police said they would question him on Wednesday.

Gun violence is not uncommon in Thailand, which has by far the highest gun ownership rates in Asia, with 15 out of every 100 people owning a firearm. According to Thailand’s Justice Ministry the number of young people carrying guns has increased 32 per cent over the past nine years.

In recent months a string of gun-crime stories has generated debate in Thailand about the prevalence of weapons.

In October a senator accidentally shot his secretary after he pulled out an Uzi machine gun at a dinner table, and the month before that a Gangnam Style “dance off” in Bangkok between two rival gangs descended into a shootout.

Surprisingly it was only 1 death that night.

Usually the drug addled pissed up fire twirling muppet backpackers are so foked up that they drown in there own vomit or drown in the sea trying to swim to Samui whilst on magic mushrooms or amphetamines.

Another awesome place that's been fuked by mass tourism. Most unfortunate as it really was paradise before that stupid full moon party lured every chav this side of the black stump.

Rest in Peace K.P.G., you where quite a gig back in the early 80's.

    It's very sad:-

In Thailand, a British man was shot dead just hours
after welcoming in the New Year with friends at a beach party.

Media on the popular party island of Koh Phangan
said a 22-year-old tourist, named as Stephen Ashton,
was gunned down after an argument between two groups
of Thai youths spiralled out of control.

Stephen Ashton was reportedly caught by a stray bullet
during a fight between two groups at a bar on Koh Phangan.

According to the Bangkok Post, the 22-year old was shot in
the upper body in the early hours and taken to hospital where
    he was pronounced dead.

The Foreign Office said it was aware of the death of a
British national in Thailand, and was providing consular
    assistance to the family.

It later confirmed the dead man's name.

Police investigating the incident later arrested a Thai man,
    according to the Post.

Mr Ashton's neighbour, Dawn Mason, described him as a
    "normal, likeable young man".

She said his family had moved to Purley, south London,
about three years ago and had always been "very nice neighbours".

Mr Ashton's family said they were too distraught to speak to reporters.

Koh Phangan is a resort island neighbouring Koh Samui,
it draws thousands of backpackers to its famous full moon parties.

Apparently his mother is away on a skiing holiday,
she has been informed and is making her way to Thailand
to arrange for her son's body to be repatriated.

Tributes paid to victim of Thailand 'shooting'

Friends have been paying tribute to Stephen Ashton
on his Facebook page and on Twitter after the British
tourist was killed at a New Year's Eve party in Thailand.

    One person wrote:
"Cannot believe what I've just seen...in complete and
utter shock...thoughts are with you and your family".

Others described him as an "absolute gent" and a "lovely boy".

    Another wrote on Twitter:

RIP Stephen Ashton, can't believe it absolute shock, nicest fella and had so much going for him! Rip Steve

There was talk on the news earlier that there had been a
great deal of time waiting for Emergency Services.

I don't think they have a Hospital on Koh Phangan?

RIP Stephen. Sincere condolences to family and friends,
    this shouldn't be happening,
All the women take their blouses off
And the men all dance on the polka dots
    It's closing time !
