RATCHABURI - A passenger van heading to Bangkok ran off the road when a tyre burst and plunged into a ditch, killing three people and injuring nine others, police said on Tuesday morning.
Pol Maj Gen Pongsakorn Khemmarat of Muang Ratchaburi police station said the vehicle was a white Toyota van running between Bangkok and Petchaburi with the licence plate 14-3974 Bangkok.
The three fatalities were a man and two women. Two of them were named as Manote Ritdet and Bongkotcharat Rattanayenjai. Police have not identified the second woman yet.
All three passengers died from drowning.
Pol Maj Gen Pongsakorn said most of the nine injured were in critical condition and are now in hospital.
Witnesses told police that they saw the passenger van travelling at high speed when its right rear tire burst, causing the vehicle to smash into a tree and careen into the ditch.
Jiraset Yuangsa-ard, the driver, was injured and will be questioned after he is discharged from hospital.
