Railway bomb kills 3, wounds 35 in South

Three defence volunteers were killed and 35 people including passengers and train staff were wounded, many seriously, in a bomb explosion that hit a local train in Rueso district in Narathiwat province on Sunday morning.

Pol Lt-Col Jakrit Wongprommet, deputy chief of Rueso police station, said the incident occurred at about 7.30am when a bomb planted on the railway track at the Bukit Yure station near Ban Salo in Rueso district was detonated while the Yala-Sungai Kolok train No 453 stopped at the station.

After the bomb, which was made of a gas cylinder and weighed about 100kg, exploded, militants hiding nearby opened fire at the station.

The huge explosion badly damaged the train's passenger cars. The dead defence volunteers were identified as Prasarn Chatree, Panakorn Choonkaew and Sooksawat Raungnam.

The wounded included one railway police officer and two train ticket inspectors.

The rest of the wounded were passengers. Four or five of them had their legs or arms severed by shrapnel.

All of the wounded were rushed to Rueso Hospital.

The explosion left a hole about 3 metres in diametre and 2 metres deep in the rail track. Two passenger cars were derailed.

Train services on the route were suspended.

State Railway of Thailand governor Prapat Chongsa-nguan said he would travel down South on Sunday to inspect the damage.

In Narathiwat's Rangae district, a woman was killed and her son seriously wounded in a gun attack on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at about 8am on a road near Ban Luk Khao in tambon Tanyong Limo in Rangae district.

Police said Halimo Royi, 53, and her son Abdulloh, 25, were returning home from work at a rubber plantation at Ban Lubo Diyae on a motorcycle. Two men followed them on another motorcycle and the pillion rider opened fire at them with an AK47 rifle.

Both Halimo and Abdulloh were hit in the body. The mother was killed instantly while her son was seriously wounded.

Police recovered more than 10 AK47 cartridges at the scene.

In Yala province on Sunday morning, about 300 people, including civilians, religious leaders, government officials, police and soldiers, took part in a religious ceremony, praying for peace and an end to the continuing violence in the deep South.

On Saturday morning, a woman was killed and 33 others injured in a motorcycle bomb attack in Yala's Muang district.

More than 5,000 people have been killed and more than 9,000 hurt in over 11,000 incidents, about 3.5 a day, in Thailand's three southern border provinces and four districts of Songkhla since violence erupted afresh in January 2004, according to Deep South Watch, which monitors the regional violence.

Firefighters battle a blaze that gutted a row of shophouses in Yala

A motorcycle-bomb blast in downtown Yala yesterday morning killed one person and wounded 33 others, while causing five shophouses to catch fire, as well as other property damage.

Security officials said they believed two highly sought-after insurgents - Hassan Mousodi and Saudi Satapor - were behind yesterday's attack. The officials were compiling intelligence and further evidence to back up their claim.

Meanwhile, a monitoring centre said this year had been the worst for vehicular bomb attacks since violence flared in the deep South in 2004. The director of Deep South Watch, Asst Prof Srisomphob Jitphiromsri, said the number of general insurgent attacks was down, but the vehicular bombs had a more serious psychological impact on the local population.

He said the recent spike in insurgent violence was aimed at attracting the attention of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation meeting held last week in Djibouti. He did not elaborate.

Yesterday's attack, at around 7.30am, targeted a five-member team of military dog handlers travelling in a pickup truck, police said. The blast, likely detonated by mobile phone signals, also caused a car to catch fire, along with five nearby homes, and damaged two shops selling construction materials. The bomb was hidden in a motorcycle with a sidecar parked near the shops.

The body of the lone fatality, 49-year-old woman, was found slumped on a motorcycle parked nearby. Eyewitnesses told police she was struck by the soldiers' pickup, which was blown in her direction by the powerful blast. Ten of the wounded remain in hospital, while 23 others were allowed to go home after treatment.

The Army's chief in Yala, Major-General Prakan Chollayuth, conceded security measures were lax and vowed to improve them. A manhunt was later carried out after a blockade of both suspects' homes, but no trace of them was found.

Police said Hassan was an insurgent leader active in Muang Yala district with close ties to suspected bomb-maker Saudi. Video footage from security cameras showed a man riding a motorcycle with a sidecar around the area before parking it in front of one of the shops. This suspect was later picked up by a man on another motorcycle, later seen heading towards a railway line.

Owners of two shops called for help from officials but couldn't give an estimate of damage.

Separately, a security blockade was conducted in Narathiwat to look for four insurgent leaders reportedly in hiding with help of sympathetic locals, but turned up no suspects or other clues.

A police-soldier force surrounded a village of 80 homes in Ra-ngae district to seek Amran Ming, Abdulhakim Puteh, Tuansae Tuankueji, and Usni Badoh, in the hope of arresting men who were their subordinates.

Could well be that when the Jews are bombed as they are right now with hundreds of Rockets fired by Hamas and its various splinter groups is that the Jews always exact a terrible price on the bombers by way of a swift retaliation , whilst the Thai's run around like headless chickens ,waiting for the next spate of bombings against innocent civilians ,its every Countrys Governments duty to defend its citizens ,this IMHO is all the Israeli's are doing ,the problem with many is that the Israeli's are far better at defending than their attackers ,this simple fact has been proved over and over again when the various Arab Countrys have declare war's on them ,vowing to drive them into the sea ,and destroy the state of Israel FOREVER, you would have thought that Hamas would have learned something from this ,but apparently they haven't ,as they still right now at this moment in time totally deny Israel's right to exist ,maybe cos Iran is bankrolling them along with Hezbollah to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars to fight their proxy war against Israel , maybe my mate Pat Condell says it so much better than myself ,for me its just a Palestinian con job,

Maybe those who blame the Jews for almost all the Worlds Ills should watch this Video ,and then of course completely ignore it ! to a lesser degree The South of Thailand is suffering the same sort of Islamic radicalism that has caused over 5,000 deaths since the problem arose and being that the Thai security forces are so useless they are totally unable to safe guard their own citizens at which the Israeli's are so good at, which of course the "bleeding hearts" brigade so strongly condemns.
