Thread: passport and visa question

The dolly bird (non-thai) needs a new passport as she has run out of pages. She will get this in her home country and they will put two holes in her old passport and no doubt cancel it.
Can she then come back into Thailand by showing her Non Imm O visa which is in the old passport, and get her new passport stamped?

They charge a fee for transferring visa's to a new passport, which does suggest that they will require this to be done. Best to ask to local thai embassy or better still consulate.

Yes, that's the way it goes. After that you have to visit local immigration and (for a fee) get the visa moved to the new passport.

So make sure you keep the old (invalid) passport for your visit to immigration!

At Korat immigration they do it for free. Different immigration office.................

I'm just guessing, but surely her cancelled passport is that, cancelled.

Have you tried enquiring with the Thai consulate in the country she is from ?

The passport is cancelled but if a visa in it is still valid she can enter on it. Then get it transferred over at immigration. It was free the last time I did it in Bangkok.

^well thats the point - the passport is cancelled but the visa is valid...
I have heard from the legal company that my company use that she will be fine doing this but I dont really trust them - i was hoping someone had actually had direct experience of this.

Remember my China visa, which you mentioned was transferable.

Well it wasn't.

The PRC said I had to get a new one. Then they refused to give me another one, because of my deportation from Indonesia.*


*for those who don't know, for removing sticky visa labels.

ran out of pages in mine and all they did was staple the old cancelled passport to the back of my new one so they could flip through and check the visa.
visa still valid.
no plomplem.

A few of my sticky visa labels have almost become completely unstuck in my passport. Will I be allowed back into Laos or Cambodia if they do fall out or is it only the Indos who give a damn?

I don't know about those, but ....cautionary tale....please all be careful about Indo visas, especially when entering Bintan. I very nearly ended up in jail (I was told subsequently) due to pulling out old stickies. My old passport was scarred with a big red stamp, and getting visas in my new passport has now been prejudiced. Serious advice from an idiot.

I have done it, my kid has done it, but my wife has a problem doing it.
But only due to the fact that her new passport is in a new name (mine).
So, make sure you don't marry dolly bird while in Vegas...

Me too...several times.
Got a non imm 'o' in june 09, passport expired a few months later. My embassy gave me a document to have the visa transferred into my new passport, which I never did. Think I did about 3/4 border crossings just showing them the visa in my old passport and getting the new one stamped...never had a problem doing that.

Visas are valid for their entire life, even if in an old passport

you will have to carry the new and old passport together though, unless you think it is worth transferring
