The greatest lead singer of all time ?

I had this debate in a pub last week and thought some TD members may
have some singers from the past that may beat my number one choice.

So who is the greatest lead singer ? He or she can be part of a band or a solo artist.

Main skills to take into account ...

    1. Pure vocal ability
    2. Show man /owning the crowd
    3. Coolness factor
    4. Writes the songs

After an hour of arguing we all agreed that love or hate the bands music you
have to admire Freddie Mercury,We could not think of anyone else that owned
the stage like Freddie and had such a strong powerful voice.

Whilst you have many great singers including Robert Plant, Freddie who was probably the greatest stage showman and Anne Wilson from Heart I have to say Paul Rogers is far and away the best rock & roll singer.

I went through a death metal phase as a kid. Glen Benton from Deicide takes the cake in that genre...

I would of loved to see Robert Plant and Ann Wilson on stage together.

In fact both were rated the Rolling Stone lead singers at the same time.

Gotta go with Loy Toy on Paul Rodgers as being up there, and would add in Roger Daltry, who wasn't a bad showman either.

Probably one of the best front man and known as the lounge lizard.

And a bloke who tried to copy Morrison's on-stage style and was pretty good at it.

    Yup, good pick young Janis.

The parameters are a bit broad really.

Are we simply looking at showmanship?

Roger Daltrey, The Who!, David Lee Roth, Van Halen, Sting, The Police to name a few. I know they meet the first 3 requirements and clearly wrote some songs for each of their respective bands. Sting wrote almost all their music.

To announce best of all time, Far to many good ones to answer that.

As much as most hate with great disdain, there are some "Rap" artists that meet all 4. I am not talking Ghetto rap, but Rap/Hip-Hop and R&B.

I like all styles music. I see talent in all of them.
