    Ko Phayam

Early January,I went to visit an island called Ko Phayam, which is off the coast from Ranong.
A pain to get to from Chiang Mai,but well worth the hassle.
Next time,I`ll fly down to Phuket and get the bus to Ranong.First ferry does`nt leave `till 10a.m.Last leaves about 4p.m. Slow boat takes 2 hours(think the cost was 200baht), speedboat does it in half hour(400baht).

Arrived on island, and got motorbike taxi (70baht) to Joker bar, Ao Yai bay.

there are no cars on the island.
    Stayed at Joker bar

Ao Yai bay was pretty empty of tourists, unlike the other bays on the island.

Sea was clean,no rough stuff, great for swimming in. clean, white sandy beaches, very few tourists at this end of the island.

    looking west from Joker Bar.

    This is Joker Bar.

the busiest I seen of the beach.

    seating area outside Joker Bar.

    eating area.

    looking east from Joker bar.

    squid fishing boats.

garlic shrimps, 80 baht. Food was delicious.

    sunset

    bungalows at Joker Bar.

250 baht a night. Electric jenny gets turned off when bar closes, usually around midnight.

cold water shower, great view of the sky.

Upmarket tourist places on the other beaches.
I loved it here, fresh seafood, ice cold beers etc.
You need to bring a women with you, there`s no girlie bars here....
I will definately be visiting again next xmas. Low season is apparently 98% closed.

I travelled down from Chiang Mai by train. departed C.M. at 3pm. Arrived Bangkok at 5am. Booked into Your Place guesthouse, opposite Hua Lampong station.Clean and cheap guesthouse. Room for three cost 600baht for the day. Got night bus from southern bus station, departed 8pm,arrives Ranong 5am. Five hour wait at ferry port for first boat to Ko Phayam. Total travelling time 44 hours!
Next time,I will definately fly to Phuket...only 4 hours by bus to Ranong. Can time your arrival in Ranong so no long wait for ferry to island. Definately recommend this place, compared to the expense of Phuket.
Was a lot of krauts there,as some German in-flight magazine did a feature on ko phayam last year. Couple more years and I`ll have to start looking for another island to relax on.....

Had two friends (couple) go there for 10 days in Dec. They were raving about it... so quiet and relaxing, they loved it.

Nice thread , thanks for sharing. If you like peace and quiet no need to go to an island though. Plenty of deserted beaches south of Prachuab Kiri Kahn around Bang Saphan or along the coast past Rayong.

Oh! Why did you tell everyone about it?

It looks so nice ... So Peaceful ...
    No Cars! (Wonderful) ...
Sea was clean ... Great for swimming in ...
    Clean, white sandy beaches ...
Very few tourists at this end of the island ...
Garlic shrimps, 80 baht ... Food was delicious ...
    250 baht a night ...

I laid on a beach exactly how you are describing in November 1969 ...
    Tranquillity! No commercialism!

The same year it was on a holiday program on the TV ...

Now they call it Patong Beach Phuket!

Oh! Why did you tell everyone about it?

It's always us the tourist that messes it up!

Hope it's still there when you return!

I`d suggest you use the speedboat, instead of the slowboat. takes half hour and your there. slowboat takes 2 hours and does`nt stop at any of the other smaller islands, but you could buy a beer

    phayam details

There are flights to Ranong, the stepping off place for Koh Phayam, three days a week from Bangkok --Wednesday, Friday and Saturday -- priced at 2,800 baht one-way, 5,200 baht return. Tickets can be booked at ranongair.com. There are also flights on the same days from Phuket. There are vans or pickups at the airport to take you to the pier to catch the boat: 150 baht for the slow boat (2 hours), 350 baht for the speedboat (350 baht)

Paradise....just the way i like my thai beaches...cheap,quiet,pristine but still able to use my Blackberry...stayed 3 nights over xmas in tents...massive storm blew over and i had the best night sleep of my life...never seen so many sea eagles in one place. Stayed with the loverly Sonja from Friends Resort...search 'friends of Phayam' on facebook...pics of the super cool 500bt a night tents...(well it was high season 555)...

Drove up from Phuket, stayed the night in Khao lak .... up early leaving at 7am to drive to Ranong...tried to drive quick to catch the 9.30 slow ferry...missed that and then missed the 10am speed boat due to it been full....waited in a loverly farang style cafe opposite owned by the Blue sky resort (google them) for the 11am speed boat ...Job2do the thai reggae band had a gig on Xmas day...next time i will stay Khao lak and get up an hour later take it easier and get the 11am speed boat. Drive back is easy, boat leaves about 1pm...just over three hours to Phuket on great roads with a chance to catch a sunset on Phukets Sarasin bridge/Andaman viewpoint.

Took the Auld man and his TGF and it was a loverly relaxing family experience in pristine conditions...So many beautiful Islands in this area...early morning walk on the beach after the storm with the mrs will take some beating for sheer bliss.
Ko Chang/Ranong is up next and will be the last major island in Thailand i have not yet visited.
