Great thread, thanks a lot. I have only seen it from a Tourists viewpoint with very little time off the schedule for roaming around Beijing on my own.

You will see KFC at every corner but not so much McDonalds. That was my experience.

BTW I just saw in the news that the Government is renewing a drive from the time of preparation for the Olympics to improve english proficiency. Target is 80% of police, 60% of sales people and 60% of coiffeurs in Beijing should have a working knowledge of english.
They must be well aware that this also opens the people to uncensored information.

Regarding visa I will have to check again in the future. I would like to be able to travel to China from the Philippines. When travelling two years ago you could only apply from your country of residence. As you also had to provide travel documents you could not make arrangements away from home.

With all due respects, and I am enjoying your thread a lot of what I posted last week was rural/urban China with the touristy things added along the way.

I found North of Shanghai to be absolutely beautiful and when compared to the rougher looking areas of the South.

Anyway I think we all agree that China has changed a lot over the last 10 years and is quite livable wherever you are stationed.

Nope, the live bar is in the back streets of Jida. You'd have to be VERY lucky to stumble across it.

I have spent a fair it of time in Shekou just outside Shenzhen. There has been a big improvement on quality of life in that area for a long time.

Some nice bars locally too, where you can have a beer and meet a few local girls.
Its not a bad place to live I lived in the Nan Hai Hotel for six months in Shekou and was treated like a Lord by the staff while I was their. I would go back in a heartbeat given the chance and a similar job.

Here's a few more random pics taken from the next district over. (same city, 10 minutes by bus). These are taken at the same time, between 5 and 6 but on a weekday. You can see it's a little busier.

Thats the ocean just down there, I'll wander down there and get some pics one day.

There'll be lot of BBQing and drinking beer here later on such a balmy evening.

A few I took from the car window on the way to work this morning, excuse the bugs.
The camera ran out of battery just as I arrived at work so you don't get to see my place of work.

    That's Macau you're looking at.

We'll soon be able take the express train to Guangzhou. This is going to Change the dynamics of the city a lot.
The train terminates at the Macau border crossing so it'll be easy for people to pop down from Guangzhou to Macau for a spot of Gambling.

Cranes everywhere you look. That on the right used to be fish farms and banana and Pawpaw plantations and market gardens. Green and lush.

Two minutes later I arrived at work and the battery went flat.

No problem actually, loads of people have got cars and licenses.
    I'm just tight.
Taking into consideration purchase price, registration, insurance, fuel, oil etc, parking, road tolls, maintenance, tires and other costs I'm sure to have forgotten, balanced against the fact that for work the company provides a van and driver, for weekend around town, taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap and for weekend excursions I can hire a nice big comfortable a/c van and driver for the day who will take us to the beach or whatever and wait for us (or bugger of and come back later) and take us home for 2-300 RMB for the day (1000-1500B) also allowing me to have a few beers without worrying about drinking and driving I haven't been able to justify the purchase of a vehicle.
There are definitely times when it would be extremely convenient to have a car but they aren't that many compared to the times it is so convenient to jump out of a hire car in front the restaurant or wherever I'm going and go in leaving any concerns about parking or drunk driving behind.
I must confess I do miss driving but frankly the times I have driven here have been quite stressful what with worrying about meandering pedestrians and cyclists and buffalo (outside the city) and so on.

Very informative thread duggie. China is an incredible place to experience, especially the food and street personality.

I'll be back there next May after Japan and might pop over and check your city out.
