"German chancellor Angela Merkel today called for a "thorough, quick" investigation into a Nato air strike which Afghan officials claim killed 70 people.
The demand came as the row over the airstrike by US planes in Kunduz province, in northern Afghanistan, threatened to escalate.
The strike was ordered by Germany, and Ms Merkel said she wanted to know whether civilians were killed in the attack.
The raid has caused uproar in Germany, which will hold parliamentary elections on 27 September.
Speaking in Berlin, Ms Merkel said a quick investigation was essential: "The German government and I personally want to see a Nato investigative team... carry out a thorough and quick explanation of what took place and whether there were civilians killed."

The Taliban has and is known to adapt military and with their tactics.

Now, they see public opinion, and diplomatic routes, I believe.

Is the tide shifting? Is sentiment falling for NATO with the civilian casualties.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Taliban leaders watching western news casts, as part of their strategy.

Q-And just how the fuck are you going to find out, look at the uniforms?
A-No cause they would have been burned if they did infact dress differently than civillians.

Afghan raid 'killed 30 civilians'

Thirty civilians were killed during a Nato air strike on two hijacked fuel tankers in Afghanistan earlier this month, a government investigator says.

The tankers were seized by the Taliban in the restive northern province of Kunduz earlier this month.

The official said almost 100 people in total died in the strike, reportedly ordered by German commanders.

Nato has acknowledged that some civilians were killed but has yet to publish the results of its inquiry.

After the air strike, which took place on 4 September, President Hamid Karzai called the attack an "error of judgement" and sent his own commission to the area to investigate.

"Based on our interviews with local officials, villagers and the district governor, we have found that 119 people were killed and wounded," said investigator Mohammadullah Baktash.

He said 30 civilians had been killed and nine wounded. Sixty-nine Taliban were killed - 20 of whom were unarmed, he added.

Mr Baktash said the full report would be released over the coming days.

"We cannot say whether the air strike was necessary or not. We will present our report to Karzai and it will be up to him to investigate with the Germans," he said.

Last week, a prominent Afghan human rights group, Afghan Rights Monitor, said that according to its own investigation between 60 and 70 civilians had died in the air strike.

The strike, called by German commanders who feared the loaded tankers could be used as mobile bombs, hit as villagers gathered with containers, planning to collect fuel.

Civilian casualties caused by international troops in the country are a major source of friction with the government and the people of Afghanistan.

As for civilians killed, as soldiers tell it, Tango is killed, his weapon is hustled away by fellow terrorists and presto he's a dead civilian. You cannot fight this war by protecting everyone who claims to be a civilian. Civilians have died in every war, and the terrorists are laughing their a**es off about the Euroweenie rules of engagement that they sucked Obama into following. The Washington Post newspaper reported Sunday that a German commander in Afghanistan may have violated NATO rules when he ordered the air strike based on intelligence from just one source.

The Post says the German officer received video from an American fighter jet, showing people around two fuel trucks hijacked by the Taliban. An Afghan informant said everyone at the site was an insurgent, and the German officer ordered a satellite-guided bomb dropped on each truck.

According to the newspaper, a NATO fact-finding team estimates that some 125 people were killed in the strike, and that at least 24 of them were not insurgents.

The NATO rules are aimed at reducing civilian casualties and forbid bombing civilian targets based on a sole source of information.

German officials say the order to attack was given because the fuel trucks could be used as weapons in a suicide attack against nearby German troops.
Aww, shucks, it's NATO's fault that the German commanders are inept and the German troops are pansies.
