Iran ends cooperation with UN nuclear arms probe

Iran ends cooperation with UN nuclear arms probe - Yahoo! News

VIENNA, Austria - Iran signaled Thursday that it will no longer cooperate with U.N. experts probing for signs of clandestine nuclear weapons work, confirming the investigation is at a dead end a year after it began.

The announcement from Iranian Vice President Gholam Reza Aghazadeh compounded skepticism about denting Tehran's nuclear defiance, just five days after Tehran stonewalled demands... [Read More]

» Olymics not about politics - Iraq banned over political feud?
Jul 25, 2008 - 8:31 AM - by Bugs
WTF? Lots of crap spewed out time and again about how everyone should shut their traps about politics, just hold hands, sing kumbaya, and watch the athletes do their thing - caus' the Olympics is all about sports don't ya' know.

Now the IOC tells Iraq to stuff it - don't bother sending your athletes to Beijing. Why? - Because of a political tiff between the Iraqies and the IOC, so much for the Olympics having nothing to do with politics. I guess that bit about politics don't matter only holds true for the 1.3 billion pound gorilla in the room?

Huge foreign exchange loss for UN in Burma relief

Rangoon (dpa) - United Nations humanitarian chief John Holmes acknowledged Thursday that the international community's relief effort for the victims of Cyclome Nargis in Burma was losing millions of dollars to the regime's foreign exchange controls.

"This is an extraordinary exchange loss, and where that gain goes I'm not sure," Holmes said in an interview before departing Burma after a three-day assessment tour of the areas affected by the cyclone that slammed into... [Read More]

This is one of my favourite places in the world. Situated in the South of China near Shaouguan about a three hour drive from Guangzhou we go here a few times a year for r & r and to visit friends in the nearby city.

(Sorry about the picture quality I cut and pasted these from my gallery on TD the other function is not working)

The national park is famous for this mountain called 'The Father Stone'. There is also a 'Mother Stone' which I will leave up to the imagination.

» BKK hotel 1,000 - 1,500baht
Jul 24, 2008 - 11:05 AM - by Rattanaburi
Any recommendations for a clean hotel in Bangkok which is conveniently located near the skytrain not in the nana area. My price range is from 500 to 1,500 per night. It must have a nice size bathtub and cable with CNN.( I haven't seen CNN for years!) I guess Ratchadadumneurn Road/Kaosan area is okay too. Just some location where its easy to get on a bus or skytrain to get around town. I'd like to get away for a night tomorrow or Saturday. Any links would be appreciated.

WORLDWIDE CAUTION - July 16, 2008

This Worldwide Caution updates information on the
continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence
against Americans and interests throughout the world. In
some countries, the rise in oil and food prices has caused
political and economic instability and social unrest.
American citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of
vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their
security awareness. This supersedes the Worldwide Caution
dated January 17, 2008.

The Department of State remains concerned about the

» Trees
Jul 24, 2008 - 9:17 AM - by a. boozer
We have just purchased a few rai of what is essentially hill land, near Ban Chang (Rayong). The soil is extremely sandy, and there is currently cassava (man sahm bpa lang), growing. Not being farmers, once this has been harvested, we would like to plant trees, to prevent, as much as possible, soil erosion. Obviously, the requirement is for trees with roots which will spread well and provide a good key to the ground. Can any TD members please assist and come up with practical suggestions? We will shortly be commencing building a new home, near the peak of this land, so the preservation of... [Read More]

good morning all ,
I am currently staying with my Thai girl and her parents in a small village 100 k from Nongkhai .
I have no access to English speaking tv channels or any contact with other falangs , which is making life pretty miserable at the moment.
My only outlet is reading ,and unfortunately I am down to my last book .
Does anyone living in this area know if Nong khai has any second hand / or
exchange book shops ?
Thanx in advance,

» The Chinese love their Government
Jul 23, 2008 - 10:16 PM - by sabang
East does not meet West on China's self-image

CHINESE people are overwhelmingly satisfied with the direction of their country, a Pew Centre survey published yesterday shows.

The survey results, which rank China first among 24 nations, point to an enormous gulf between domestic and Western perceptions of China that has widened in the aftermath of the Tibet riots and troubled Olympic torch relay. China's country satisfaction rating soared to 86 per cent from 48 per cent in 2002.

Analysts said the results should not be dismissed merely as Chinese people saying what the Government wanted them to say.

» Chiang Mai Male Hash House Harriers - Weekly Updates
Jul 23, 2008 - 8:04 PM - by mobs00
The Chiang Mai male hashers run weekly on alternate days; ie, Monday this week and Tuesday next week then back to Monday.

Basically a bunch of local guys meet up at a set location which differs each week for a bit of exercise followed by lots of beer. We then go back into town to test the aptitude of the local working girls; at which point we consume more beer.

And as a bonus when we all go to the Foxy Lady after the run the first drink is free.

I will be keeping this thread updated on a weekly basis with run site locations around Chiang Mai and below is some history of the Hash.
